What are Mao Dun's viewpoints and methods of literary criticism?
Write according to the light

As a critic, Mr Mao Dun's value in the history of modern literature in China is no less than his value as a novelist. Seeing Mao Dun's literary criticism articles, I feel a lot, because his literary criticism is not the same as that of contemporary people. Most contemporary literary critics are Chinese majors, so we should start a dialogue with writers from the knowledge pedigree of modern literature and contemporary literature. Mao Dun is not like this. Before engaging in literary criticism, he had a heavy academic preparation and rich knowledge background. Besides the accomplishment of China's ancient culture, he is also a translator with a broad international vision. He translated many works when he was the editor-in-chief of Novel Monthly. For example, translating Gorky's works is very interested in the works of Nietzsche, Russell and Lenin. In his own article, he tries to express his understanding of the writer's text from various angles, and the elements of sociology, history and literary theory are hidden in the text.

Personally, I think that the formation of China's modern literary criticism language has a process of transformation and change. Lu Xun used many brandeis's methods to interpret Pushkin's works when he wrote On Moro Poetry. But at that time, Lu Xun's critical style was also influenced by Liu Xie. Around 1907, literary criticism was not completely divorced from the influence of traditional literary theory. Lu Xun used Nietzsche's discourse method, brandeis's and Liu Xie's classical Chinese theory method in a mixed way. The texts are rich and varied. The sentence patterns, concepts and methods of classical Chinese, the writings of China's pre-Qin philosophers, especially Zhuangzi's vocabulary and concepts, are all embedded in Lu Xun's critical style. By the time Mao Dun's generation appeared, the way of expression had changed, and the shadow of ancient literary theory had begun to fade. We can face the writer's text with the logic and methods of modern western criticism. This change influenced the later atmosphere, so I always hoped that someone would study the production process of China's modern literary theory and have a change in thinking expression.

Before Mao Dun, Wang Guowei's literary theory was also influential. The reflection on China's traditional literary theory and western literary theory, especially German classical philosophy and modern philosophy, gave birth to new thinking, showing his efforts in finding the category and method of China's literary criticism. Mao Dun borrowed ideas from his predecessors. The articles in the period of Novel Monthly have lost their old flavor and new look. He has formed his own independent, natural and personal critical language when writing articles such as Naturalism and China's Modern Novels.
