"Bright Stars in the Night Sky" —— In Memory of Mr. Fan Jun

Li Xiangping

I gently played a song of a thousand winds to commemorate the dead, and let the melody of this song accompany me to finish this essay. For Mr. Fan Jun who quietly left this noisy world, Song of a Thousand Winds can best express my memory. I seem to hear him say, "Please don't stand at my grave and cry, I'm not there, I'm not asleep, I'm a never-ending song ..."

Busy with things I don't know every day seems to have lost some kind of heartache for a long time. It was the afternoon of June 65438+1October1May, and I learned the news of teacher Fan's death. The short message sent by my colleague made me absent-minded and speechless for a while. I know that he is not actually "dead". He just turned into a thousand wisps of breeze, into the sunshine shining on the snow in winter, into a bird hovering and flapping its wings in the morning, like the song of a thousand winds, but still could not restrain his endless loneliness.

Mr. Fan Jun, originally from Zhenhai, Zhejiang Province, was born in Shanghai in February 1930. In terms of age, he is my father. His life experience should be the unique amphibious characteristics of that generation, right? He seldom wrote about his primary and secondary school life in Shanghai, and his adolescent experience, which had an important influence on a person's personality and career choice throughout his life, was almost drowned in the sea of tranquility of his private history because of his "silence". The only thing that can be guessed is that Shanghai Mellon Middle School, where he attended, was a missionary boys' school founded by the British Christian London Church. Its principal, Shen Tilan, turned this middle school into an educational base for the democratic revolution in the 1930s and 1940s, sheltered underground activities and trained many red talents. Mr. Fan Jun's personal interest must have been gradually formed under the influence of the free air in Mellon Middle School. However, this era of war and social unrest and change only ended after he peeped for a while. His flying youth soon witnessed the birth of another era. 1In September, 949, he was admitted to Peking University with the earliest baptism of modern democratic education he received in Meilong Middle School. After four years in college, I planted the seeds of the May 4th New Culture Enlightenment in my heart, and from then on, I took root and sprouted with him in Beijing. I'm afraid this is also the reason why he always chose to do modern literature research after working in the College of Literature from 65438 to 0953.

When I met Mr. Fan Jun in the mid-1980s, he had worked in the Institute of Literature for nearly 30 years. Teacher Fan, who has experienced various political movements such as anti-Rightism and the storm of the Cultural Revolution, is not as romantic as I thought on the surface. On the contrary, he seems unsmiling. At that time, I just went to the College of Liberal Arts to study for a master's degree. My teachers, He Xilai and Du Shuying, often mention three names. One is Mr. He Qifang, who symbolizes the tradition of rigorous scholarship in the College of Liberal Arts; First, Mr. Luan Xun, the classical aesthetics of China he talked about exudes the vitality of weeds. It seems that when it comes to economic assistance, it can be saved if it is retired; The third teacher is Fan Jun. The teacher repeatedly emphasized the seriousness of Fan Jun, saying that even if he spoke at a small meeting, he would write an outline with dense materials, so he must study this spirit well. I didn't attend teacher Fan's class at that time, but he left a deep impression on us. He refers to a thoughtful and keen learning style. Later, I studied medicine with Mr. Tang Tao and met Mr. Fan Jun, whom I admired for a long time, in a modern room. I remember when we first met, he wouldn't let us call him "teacher", but called him by his first name. We are not used to it. He called us "teachers" in turn. Seeing the young man's embarrassment, he smiled like a child. In fact, there is no lack of romance and humor in his life. His nature is spontaneous and pure, and he is tired of worldly extravagance and hollow reputation. However, these are often hidden in his seemingly unsmiling seriousness.

Teacher Fan said, "Being a prude, doing things with cumbersome habits, often hesitating, writing articles with questions, always endlessly repeating and procrastinating" (preface to China Modern Literature Research), this introspection can probably be confirmed by his tireless revision of each article-almost all the articles included in his anthology have left traces of his repeated revision into drafts, and some have been revised for ten years or even longer. It's been five years from writing to revising. In this era when everything is speed and competition for topics and resources, Teacher Fan's method is obviously ridiculously slow and "out of date". Unlike those gunmen who are ingenious and write thousands of words, he sees everything easily and "lifts everything easily". On the contrary, he seems to be "easy to mention", which seems to some people.

Anyone who knows Mr. Fan Jun knows that his seriousness and purity are almost pedantic. He spends almost more time reading articles for others than writing articles himself every year. No matter whether it is a colleague or a graduate student, as long as there is an article sent to him, he will take the trouble to read it again and again, and then write his own opinion. Literary criticism encountered some "difficult manuscripts", which were also sent to him for review. His academic judgment is often carefully made after a lot of reading and deliberation. Teacher Fan knows that learning is a public tool in the world. He often devotes his thoughts to those who ask him for advice without reservation, so that others can write articles. Once someone else's work is published, he will stop writing articles on it.

Some colleagues once regretted that he had delayed his personal research because of his early participation in the collective project "The History of Modern Literature in China". However, just as a clam is ill, from his own experience in writing the history of modern literature, he deeply felt the great influence of the transformation of China society from modern to contemporary on the establishment and evolution of modern literature, and excavated the academic value of modern literature in the study of history, thought and theory. He turned the most boring job of writing an annual academic summary article into a general cleaning of academic history with hidden academic wisdom. He is willing to be a thankless "scavenger" and clean up the spiritual and academic "Ogias Cowpen" accumulated for decades. It was from the early 1980s that he found his own language in these articles similar to the academic history or the history of discipline development.

He doesn't have any great works, but his academic contribution is reflected in his slow work and meticulous work. He changed the discipline construction of modern literature, which resumed after 1979, from an unconscious noisy state to a conscious academic direction. Through the case study of Yao Yao, Mr. Tang Tao and other modern literature research experts, he initiated a reflective and critical "case study" of modern literature; With the help of writers' research (such as understanding Lao She), he returned to the historical scene and reinterpreted the contemporary significance of the three core issues of the May 4th Enlightenment, the criticism of the old culture and the construction of the new culture with his rich artistic sensibility and insight of historical research. Under his simple words, the passion of the generation that has existed since Miron Middle School is surging.

At the end of Understanding Lao She, he quoted the British writer Dickens' exposition on "Times" in A Tale of Two Cities to show the complexity and contradiction of social life, and Marx's exposition on freedom and individuality in Comment on Prussia's recent censorship order to show the vast world and freedom of spiritual life. He wrote:

"If we can understand the richness and complexity of social reality like Dickens, respect the diversity and originality of spiritual labor like Marx, and learn to accept, appreciate and cherish' every drop of dew in the sun shines with endless colors', we will surpass the heavy prejudice we have seen in some historical stages and have a' fairer understanding and more scientific evaluation' for writers (see Fan Jun), which is the profound enlightenment he got from the study of literary history.

Huang Zongxi's "Yi Case" in the case of Confucianism in the Ming Dynasty wrote that Liu was not afraid of power and acted against the secular world. He repeatedly admonished Wanli with the theory of benevolence and righteousness, which was called "pedantic" by Wanli. Some seniors talked about this matter and thought that Liu's pedantry was rare. Mr Fan Jun's honesty, loneliness and purity sometimes seem pedantic. But in today's world, "when it comes to utility, it's hard to be pedantic if you can do it." This is why I feel warm and awe every time I think of Teacher Fan.

May teachers be like "a thousand wisps of breeze" and "bright stars in the night sky", so that the night is no longer lonely!

Fan Jun: A True Myth

Wei Jian

Archives of the deceased

Name: Fan Jun Age: 8 1 Birthplace: Zhenhai, Zhejiang Province was a researcher at the Institute of Literature of China Academy of Social Sciences and a member of the Honorary Department of China Academy of Social Sciences.

Mr Fan Jun passed away.

The scholar trained by New China has been studying modern China literature in the Institute of Literature of China Academy of Social Sciences for more than 50 years. After retirement, he was awarded "Honorary Member of Social Sciences Department" by China Academy of Social Sciences, and he enjoyed the highest academic honor in humanities and social sciences in China. However, according to the popular "expert" standard, Mr. Fan Jun is not even a medium "talent". He has no awards, no application for scientific research projects, and no academic monographs (only papers, etc.). ), few papers have been published. However, people who have read Fan Jun's papers are almost always praised.

1986 In the spring, at the national Lao She seminar, Mr. Fan Jun read out his handwritten paper Understanding Lao She, and the audience was silent. Many participants and I were sorry that we couldn't remember, and asked him when he could see the manuscript. He seemed very upset and said, "It's not well written, but it needs to be corrected." Waiting for a year, two years ... ten years! This paper has just been officially published. We are all praising the masterpiece of grinding a sword for ten years. But Fan Jun was still not satisfied until 200 1, and he made another big revision. This is one of many "myths" in Fan Jun: a paper was revised on 15!

Fan Jun's second myth: improper tutor. When the degree system was first established in China, Mr. Fan Jun could be a doctoral supervisor, but he refused to apply, and even the master tutor was resolutely improper until he retired. Anyone who is familiar with Fan Jun knows that he is not modest and does not want to get rid of the fatigue of being a tutor. He wants to do things, but he doesn't want to be famous. He volunteered to tutor many other people's master students and doctoral students year after year. Many younger generations, including me, have received his careful guidance. For more than twenty years, our private disciple wanted to invite him to dinner, but he didn't agree once.

Fan Jun has a more sacred "myth".

In 2000, a news spread like wildfire among peers: an anonymous person contributed 1 10,000 yuan to set up the "Yao Yao Academic Award". We all want to know who this mysterious figure is. Many people speculate that she is the daughter of Professor Yao Yao, the late president of China Modern Literature Research Association.

Two years later, Mr. Fan Jun's Understanding Lao She was selected as the candidate paper list of the first Yao Yao Academic Award with the highest vote. Fan Jun refused to accept his resignation, but the judges insisted on commenting.

During the debate, an insider revealed that Fan Jun was an investor! Everyone present was shocked! Some people say: Fan Jun donated money in his name, which is enough to move us! Besides, use the teacher's name and don't let me say it! The speaker's voice choked. I didn't know that Fan Jun later donated 6.5438+0 million yuan to the Institute of Literature of China Academy of Social Sciences to set up the "Diligent English Research Award", and didn't let others know who the donor was.

Mr Fan Jun's happiness in helping the poor is also a topic worthy of everyone's praise. He didn't need to take a taxi when he went out, and he still took the bus until he was 80. I have only seen three of his clothes: a blue polyester tunic suit, a white shirt and a gray jacket in his later years. The 2 million yuan donated by Mr. Fan Jun includes almost all the property he inherited. He scrimped and saved, but used all his research to reward others.

Whether in good times or bad times, Fan Jun can "protect itself" and "help the world". The latter means that his research results are often related to national knowledge. Since 1953, he has participated in coordinating the macro strategy of national literature research. After 1978, he has been thinking about the study of modern literature in China from a strategic perspective, and personally planned, organized and led this cause for more than 20 years. Unfortunately, there is a "world" academic leader in this chest, who has no family and has never been married in his life. He doesn't have many hobbies except studying. We met him mainly at academic conferences. After the meeting, tourists will never see Fan Jun again. We often don't understand why he is in such a hurry to go home. There will always be only one person in that family and countless books.

Everyone is singing the praises of Mr. Fan Jun's "myth", as if he were a touching China figure in the field of modern literature research in China. What moved us was, first of all, his noble personality and the self-sacrifice behind it. In life, he is very strict with himself, so strict that he is almost demanding. For example, I was thinking, how many people care why he doesn't get married? He hardly answered. According to Fan Jun's younger brother, he didn't get married because he was afraid that his harshness would make others unbearable. How many years later, I realized how strict Mr. Fan Jun was with himself: if you can't be a good husband, you won't be; If you can't be a good father, you are not; If you can't be a good tutor, you shouldn't be. ...

I was in Beijing the day Mr. Fan Jun died. Shortly after the meeting, I heard that Mr. Fan Jun was critically ill and rushed to the bed of Beijing Hospital. He closed his eyes and couldn't hear my voice. The only information I got from him was that my temperature was extremely high. Relatives and friends around him told me about the daily life in Fan Jun.

In particular, I heard them say that Mr Fan Jun was shivering with pain when he was rescued the day before yesterday. At this time, Mr. Fan Jun became more real and ordinary in front of my eyes, became the same flesh and blood as us, but surpassed all beings in personality and created an unattainable myth.

Mr Fan Jun is out of reach, but not out of reach. Didn't he always tell the truth? Don't you always put your career and others first? Isn't it just taking advantage of the public? Isn't it just a mentor? Isn't every article carefully written? ..... However, how many people can do these seemingly simple things?

This is Mr. Fan Jun: He does everything possible to do what ordinary people should do, can do and not do. The reason for this is that he regards what people should do as a kind of belief and sticks to it. What ordinary people think should be done, once it needs to be sacrificed, will not be done. Mr Fan Jun really did what he thought he should do, no matter how much he sacrificed. Ordinary people believe this belief for a while, but Mr. Fan Jun can believe it all his life. To this end, he gave up so many human pleasures, but his personality was perfect. He used his life of pursuing great love, justice, truth and perfection to show the light of human nature and human dignity!

On the day when Mr. Fan Jun's body said goodbye, I wrote a couplet dedicated to his soul in heaven:

No wife, no possessions, no monographs, no disciples, he is studying alone and doesn't love all ordinary people.

There is great love, perseverance and insight. There are Qian Qian's private school students who devote themselves to martyrdom and only guard against sentient beings.
