On Personality Factors in Tess's Tragedy
Tess's character has a distinct duality, both weak and strong. When she faced a major turning point in her life, this was particularly obvious: she was independent and self-respecting, but in order to solve her family difficulties, she obeyed her father's order to visit relatives in the D 'Urbervilles, and Alec lured her into pregnancy; Longing for pure love, but losing myself in front of love, telling her husband about the past and being abandoned on their wedding night; She would rather work hard than wait for relief from others, but she was forced to become Alec's mistress when her father died, her family lived on the streets and her labor income was not enough to solve her predicament. When Angel came back, out of deep despair, he personally killed Alec and was sentenced to hang. Her mind, body and destiny were torn and squeezed by the two extremes of personality, and rolled in the abyss, becoming a pure angel who fell into purgatory but longed for redemption. The duality of Tess's personality-the contradiction between a high sense of responsibility and self-esteem and the pursuit of independence-led to Tess's socialization process and tragic fate.
