Comparison of Tragic Heroes in Chinese and Western Movies from the Cross-cultural Perspective

Abstract: In the multicultural background of the world, movies, as the carrier of cultural communication, naturally cannot avoid cross-cultural content. Take Unfinished Work and Chu Hanwang as examples. These are two long-lost classic films, which once took us to the ancient battlefields and court struggles. The ups and downs of the plot, the grand and wonderful scenes, the feelings and the relationship between the characters are unforgettable. This paper makes a comparative analysis of the two films from the perspectives of plot and characterization, so as to better understand the similarities and differences of their protagonists, help people better appreciate the two films from a cross-cultural perspective, and enhance their understanding of Chinese and Western historical and cultural knowledge.

Shocking the World and Chu Hanyingxiong are two classic films that we are familiar with. Although they are talking about the legend of heroes in different countries and different periods, the endings of their two protagonists are similar, and they all have the similarities of "heroes". This paper attempts to compare the two films from the aspects of plot, belief, personality, heroic temperament and tragic nature, and analyze the similarities and differences between the protagonists, so as to help people better understand the cross-cultural connotation when enjoying these two films.

First, the comparison of plots.

Shocking the World (also known as Brave Heart) is a tragic epic film that combines the legend of blood and tears. Written, directed and performed by mel gibson, a famous Hollywood movie star, on 1994, and won five awards including best film and best director in the 68th Academy Awards from 1996. The film tells the legendary story of the hero william wallace with the background of English court politics in13 ~14th century, with war as the core and love as the framework. The film began when william wallace was a child. His father (Scottish hero Marcelo Wallace) organized a resistance against the English invaders and died in the battle. Young, he bid farewell to his hometown and uncle and studied knowledge and martial arts under his guidance. During this period, the invader King Edward tyrannically ruled and issued a decree stipulating that when the bride got married, the first night's rights belonged to the Governor of England, which greatly insulted the personality of the Scottish people and aroused the people's resistance, so some nobles and farmers rose up against the rule of England. After a lapse of 20 years, william wallace grew up, returned to her former hometown, and fell in love with the hometown girl Melen. In order not to be possessed by nobles, they got married in secret. Originally, everything was so beautiful. Wallace wanted to live a stable life with his wife, but fate played a trick on him. Melen was brutally cut by a British magistrate in public. The pain of losing my father and wife finally broke out. He rose up and attacked the towns occupied by the British army, which won a temporary victory and attracted many civilians to join the rebels. Robert, a Scottish aristocrat at that time, wanted to be king of Scotland, and at the instigation of his father Booth, he formed a false alliance with Wallace. His father tried to lure Wallace to Edinburgh for peace talks. Wallace knew it was a trap, but for the sake of peace, he pinned his hopes on the nobles and ignored the advice of everyone. Wallace was arrested and sent to England for execution. Shortly after his death, noble Robert inherited Wallace's legacy and recruited his men to fight against the British army. In the end, the Scottish people won their independence.

Chu Han Jiao Xiong is a Hong Kong film directed by Li Tiansheng, which was released in 2004. The film is set in 22/kloc-0 BC, when Qin Shihuang destroyed six countries and the people were poor. In the face of the tyranny of the Qin dynasty, civil uprisings broke out one after another, competing for the Central Plains. The film begins with flashbacks, accompanied by slow and heavy music, which reminds people of the past. Accompanied by his entourage, Liu Bang, an elderly Emperor Gaozu, limped to the Wujiang River where Xiang Yu committed suicide, lamenting that "heaven and earth are heartless, and it is difficult to meet people's wishes" and asking "If Xiang Yu was willing to cross the Wujiang River in those days, could he really make a comeback?" He began to interject. Xiang Yu and Liu Bang, the protagonists in the film, experienced the development route of "hate-righteousness-enemy", that is, at first Liu Bang accidentally learned of his uprising, and Xiang Yu was afraid of exposure, which hindered the resistance to Qin and wanted to kill it (hate); When Xiang Yu tried to kill Liu Bang, Liu Bang burst into tears, swearing at Qin's atrocities, and regarded Xiang Yu as a great hero, showing his anger at Qin's tyranny. He is willing to fight against Qin with Xiang Yu, and would rather die with him than be a lackey of Qin. All these performances are so "natural" and "sincere" Xiang Yu was deeply moved and couldn't bear to kill him, but he became brothers with Liu Bang. After two years, Qin Shihuang's dune died of illness, and Zhao Gao played politics, and his discipline was corrupt, making people miserable and the world in chaos. Xiang Yu held high the banner of righteousness, overthrew the Qin Dynasty with many princes and Liu Bang and other rebel troops, claiming to be the overlord of Chu, and Liu Bang was named the king of Hanzhong. At the beginning of the world, the good times did not last long. Then the Chu-Han War began, and Xiang Yu and Liu Bang began to compete for the world (enemy). At the beginning of the war, Xiang Yu's war was smooth and Liu Bang was at a disadvantage. With the change of the war situation, victory is beneficial to Liu Bang. The Chu army was besieged by the Han army, and after being besieged on all sides, the dispute between Chu and Han finally ended in Xiang Yu's Wujiang River committing suicide. Xiang Yu's "suicide" made him heroic and made Liu Bang a Han family.

Second, the comparison of beliefs.

Wallace's struggle against Britain stems from his yearning for a free life. [1] His belief is freedom, driving away the British invaders and preventing his compatriots from being enslaved by them. In the film, under the rule of the invaders, the Scottish people lived a hard life. In addition, their new wife was killed by British soldiers. Wallace had to rebel and took the lead in launching a counterattack against English rule. This is a long-suppressed explosion. The Scottish people were encouraged by his courage and responded accordingly. As he said, "They can take our lives, but they can't take our freedom." Everyone gave up drag out an ignoble existence and went into battle. Encouraged by the enthusiasm of defectors, Wallace became the leader of the rebel army, and took it as his duty to overthrow the rule of the British invaders and realize freedom, and began an arduous struggle. This also laid the groundwork for his heroism.

Xiang Yu, as the famous Xiang Yan of Chu, had the ambition to replace the emperor since he was a child, and had the mind to defeat the Qin Dynasty and save all the people from fire and water. When he watched Qin Shihuang's tour, he wanted to take his place and blurted out, "He can take his place!" [2] In the film, he saw Qin Shihuang burn books to bury Confucianism, levy heavy taxes, collect civilian workers, repair the Great Wall, build Epang Palace, change the Chidao, and repair the tomb of Mount Li. What's more, he became an outlaw, so that the people were miserable and their lives were extremely difficult. So he decided to overthrow the rule of the Qin Dynasty and kept shouting: "There is nothing to ask for, there are no soldiers to train." His belief has never wavered, that is, to overthrow the rule of the Qin Dynasty.

Third, the comparison of personality.

Personality determines fate, which is vividly reflected in them. Although Wallace and Xiang Yu are from different backgrounds, they are similar in character. Wallace was born a commoner, and he witnessed and experienced the atrocities of English nobles since he was a child. The death of his wife aroused his resolute struggle against England until his death. In the film, Wallace's character of attaching importance to feelings and righteousness, taking care of the overall situation, being close to the nobility and preferring death to surrender is fully demonstrated. He learned that after his wife was arrested, he entered the trap of the British army alone and killed the British magistrate who killed his wife in the same place and in the same way. Focusing on the overall situation, he led the insurgents to conquer the city after the uprising, always charging ahead, being brave and good at fighting, and having good military command ability. Loyal aristocrats, unable to see the current situation clearly, rashly formed an alliance with the vacillating Scottish aristocrats in order to defeat the English invaders. Twice betrayed by them, captured and sentenced to death. I would rather die than surrender. I didn't groan or give in to all kinds of torture before I died. When I was faced with caesarean section, I took my last breath and shouted "freedom".

Xiang Yu was born in a famous family and received a good education. He was deeply impressed by his words and deeds. In the film, he is a hero who knows nothing, but has real ability, true temperament and true spirit. According to historical records, when he was young, he "failed to learn books and went to learn swords;" I can't do it anymore. I studied the art of war of "ten thousand enemies", and I didn't know much about it, so I refused to learn. "I don't know how to get into this, but it is doomed that he is not good at governing people and the country. True skill, from cutting Yin Tong, killing Yi Song, saving Julu, attacking Pengcheng, and fighting against the enemy, every war was fought by Xiang Yu himself, leading by example, being brave and unparalleled, and conquering the world with his excellent marching arrangement, fighting ability and superb martial arts. Because of his ability and personality, he is willful and clumsy in the world and does not listen to the tricks of counselors, so he is straightforward and keeps him from doing shady things. Therefore, his advisers Sean, Han Xin and Chen Ping were useless and turned to help Liu Bang. True temperament, surrounded by fear and singing, he remembered his distant hometown; On the cold battlefield, only Ai Ji accompanied Wu Zhui Ma; He is homesick, and he can't give up her and it; His face was covered with tears, and his crying was so sad, tragic and heartbreaking. True spirit, Xiang Yu's killing of the meeting and Yi Song, the battle of the stag and the battle of burning the ship made the princes walk on their knees and dare not look up, all of which reflected their heroism. His true ability and spirit made him a hero, and his true temperament made him a "human" with flesh and blood, but it also doomed his tragedy, because the war never talked about family ties. [3]
