Can ethylene directly produce ethylene oxide? What was the reaction?
Ethylene (40%vv) and oxygen (8%vv) were directly oxidized in a tubular fixed-bed reactor with nitrogen or methane gas (50%vv) as stabilizers, under the condition of silver catalysis, at 200~300℃ (the specific temperature depends on the type of catalyst).

This is an exothermic oxidation reaction. 1 mol of ethylene and 0.5 mol of oxygen produce 1 mol of ethylene oxide.

The three major patent suppliers in the world are SD (American Scientific Design Company), SHELL (Shell) and DOW (Dow Chemical).
