2. The eighth day of the fourth lunar month, also known as Buddha Bathing Festival, Buddha Birthday Festival and Dragon Boat Festival, is a religious festival that rose after Buddhism was introduced into China, but it also has the characteristics of China traditional culture, among which bathing Buddha, fasting, becoming attached, releasing people and begging children were widely popular in the past. On this day, people in Dunhuang, Gansu Province inherit historical customs and go to the Mogao Grottoes to burn incense, worship Buddha and pray early.
The eighth day of April is the birthday of Sakyamuni Buddha, and it is also the only day that the Mogao Grottoes, a world cultural heritage, allow tourists to burn incense and worship Buddha outside the guardrail of the scenic spot every year. Cave 290 of Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes in the Northern Zhou Dynasty depicts the newborn Prince Siddhartha bathed by the dragon god.
Therefore, the Temple Fair on April 8th in Dunhuang is an important traditional festival for local people. Since ancient times, the Mogao Grottoes have held a grand temple fair of Bath Buddha Festival every year.
