The relationship between news and communication

[Abstract]: With the development of communication, there is a certain degree of tension between journalism and communication education and communication education, resulting in different or even opposing views: either advocate journalism to learn from communication to improve itself, or advocate communication to replace journalism, or criticize communication to dominate journalism education. An important reason for this difference lies in the lack of in-depth understanding of the similarities and differences in news communication. On the basis of reviewing the evolution track of relevant discourses, this paper deeply analyzes the heterogeneity and correlation of journalism and communication (mainly mass communication) from the aspects of research objects or fields, research levels or academic levels, academic positions or academic orientations, and research methods. Because the heterogeneity and correlation of news and communication are intertwined, we should examine the relationship between news and communication more rationally, promote the interaction and absorption between them, and make them promote each other and complement each other, so that news and communication can achieve greater development, and there is no need to create a meaningless argument of "life and death".

First, the historical investigation of the relationship between news and communication.

Since the introduction and introduction of 1978 western communication, the relationship between journalism and communication has gradually appeared in the academic field of Chinese people. This is because, to explain what communication is, it involves the relationship with journalism. For example, as early as the mid-1980s, some researchers asserted: "Communication attaches importance to theoretical research, while journalism attaches importance to business research; Communication focuses on' learning theory' and journalism focuses on' technique'. "[1] Obviously, such a comparison has involved the relationship between journalism and communication.

In the 1990s, the relationship between journalism and communication became a subject construction issue of academic concern and discussion. In 1992, Wang compared the similarities and differences between journalism and communication, and put forward that "journalism is different levels and branches of mass communication, but communication cannot replace journalism." [2] Since then, the relationship between journalism and communication, especially whether communication can replace journalism, has gradually become a concern.

In 1996, Yu's Notes on Investigation of Journalism and Communication wrote:1During attending the 4th National Communication Seminar in Chengdu in June, 1995, the author took advantage of the meeting gap to "communicate with scholars and experts from journalism departments, journalism research institutes, newspapers, radio stations and TV stations". As a result, "all the scholars and experts contacted almost agreed that journalism. [3] The author studies the relationship between news and communication, emphasizing that "communication can't replace news", which obviously contains a prerequisite problem, that is, the viewpoint of "replacing news with communication" has appeared in academic circles.

Searching related literature, it is not difficult to find that some scholars did put forward such a view in the mid-1990s. 1994, Ming Anxiang wrote in the article "Historical Development from Journalism to Communication" that with the rapid development of the media, "the traditional concepts and terms of' Journalism' are extremely unsuitable compared with many media objects and complicated communication practices they have studied, just like dinosaur eggs and their dinosaurs that broke out of their shells and quickly became monsters." Therefore, it is a "historical trend" for journalism to spread to the world. And "China's news communication has definitely entered the stage of mass communication. In order to adapt to the development of the situation at home and abroad, it is imperative for China's journalism research to be transferred to the research based on communication and mass communication in time. " [4] Although Ming Anxiang did not use the word "replace", the content of the article, especially the conclusion, does mean "replacing news with communication". 1995, Shao Peiren clearly pointed out in his book Journalism and Communication that traditional journalism is "aging step by step and will soon become a desperate science" and that "implanting new genes, injecting new blood and introducing new methods into journalism is the only way out for journalism to gain a new life" [5]. Therefore, "replacing news with news communication, and then replacing news communication with communication, is really the need of society, the trend of the times and the necessity of history." It is independent of that person's will, and no force can control or stop it. " [6] Later, Shao Peiren reiterated in a paper: "It is the general trend and imperative to replace news reports with news communication." [7] Shao Peiren's statement is "replacing news with news communication", but he also said "replacing news communication with communication" and summarized his view as "replacing news with communication", which seems to be no problem. Different from Shao Peiren's subjective assumption, Qiu Zhengyi actually judged that communication has begun to replace journalism. He said at a seminar: "The development of discipline means negation. Communication has partially replaced journalism through its own research. " [8]
