Wencheng is about a northern man named Lin Xiangfu who meets a southern woman named Xiaomei. Lin Xiangfu met Xiaomei and performed for ten thousand years.
One night, a man and a woman came to live in Lin Xiangfu's house. The man's name is A Qiang and the woman's name is Xiaomei. A Qiang said that he was Xiaomei's cousin, and Lin Xiangfu warmly welcomed them. It was from then on that Xiaomei lived in Lin Xiangfu's heart.
But pure Lin Xiangfu didn't expect that A Qiang, known as Xiaomei's cousin, was Xiaomei's husband. It turned out that the meeting and love between Xiaomei and Lin Xiangfu were all intentional arrangements.
When Xiaomei just left Lin Xiangfu, she stole Lin Xiangfu's property. According to the time and place agreed with A Qiang, they met smoothly. Just when they decided to take the money home, they found that Xiaomei was pregnant and the child was Lin Xiangfu's.
Xiaomei, who has always been a good girl, made a bold decision this time. She must first go back to Lin Xiangfu and give birth to the baby. Because she thinks this is the only compensation she can give Lin Xiangfu.
When Lin Xiangfu had Xiaomei again, Xiaomei was pregnant with her own child. He didn't complain or doubt. He firmly believed that it was to get it back and love Xiaomei more.

Lin Xiangfu walked all the way south until he reached a place where people all spoke with the same accent and wore the same wooden shoes as Xiaomei. Lin Xiangfu thinks this is Wen Cheng.
Wearing a heavy cotton-padded coat and holding his daughter in his arms, he inquired about Xiaomei everywhere in the cold wind. Later, he learned that this place is not called Wencheng, but Xixi Town. And he will never know that there is no place called Wencheng.
Although it is called Xixi Town, Lin Xiangfu still believes that Xiaomei is from here. He settled here and met the affectionate and upright Chen Yongliang. They are like brothers and sisters, sharing weal and woe.
I also met honest and frank's upright Gu Yimin. Later, warlords scuffled, bandits flooded, towns were in danger and people were displaced. Gu Yimin was kidnapped by bandits and brutally tortured.
In order to "redeem" Gu Yimin, Lin Xiangfu tried his best to break into the bandits' den alone. Unfortunately, Lin Xiangfu was killed in a game with bandits.
The story of Xixi Town did not end because of Lin Fuxiang's departure. Xiaomei, however, has never met in her lifetime. Xixi Town is indeed what Xiaomei called "Wencheng", and "Wencheng" is just a lie.
Lin Xiangfu's story is over. The last part of the novel explains Xiaomei's past and the rest of her life. Xiaomei is indeed in Xixi town. She lives meekly with concern and guilt for her daughter.
Later, Xiaomei froze to death in a huge worship ceremony. Since then, her complicated life has come to an end.
Wen Cheng is different from Yu Hua's previous works. It is as simple and heavy as taking root, hitting the soul and hitting the floor. And "Wencheng" has a little more ethereal feeling, which permeates the soul like a dream.
The knife was bloody, and the blood stained the town red. He walked in Xiaomei's footsteps, but never found the "Chengdu".
