A few years ago, the discussion about Hu Shi's doctoral degree was ten years late, which spread all over the academic circles in China. Tang Degang, Yu Yingshi and other famous scholars all participated in this debate. Then, Hu Shi returned from Columbia University in 19 17. Why didn't Columbia University award him a doctorate?
Hu Shi1965438+transferred from Cornell to Columbia University in September 2005. At Cornell, Hu Shi mainly studied idealistic philosophy, but only dabbled in Dewey's experimental philosophy. Hu only attended a class at Columbia University for one year, and then devoted himself to writing a thesis in the second year. His doctoral thesis "History of Pre-Qin philosophers" contradicts Dewey's basic viewpoint of experimentalism. Hu Shi echoed Dewey in details, but his lack of money exposed his own shortcomings. Hu Shi didn't get a doctorate in those years, mainly because the history of pre-Qin masters didn't conform to Dewey's experimental spirit at all, and this paper didn't pass Dewey's test.
