An oil city in the northwest of Brunei. It faces the South China Sea in the north. Population is 24,000 (1981). Originally a tropical jungle wilderness, 1923 discovered oil and 1929 exploited it. The urban area is distributed along the coast, and there are many oil derricks, which are the main producing areas of onshore oil in Brunei. There is a small oil refinery. Part of the crude oil is exported, and part of it is transported to Luodong, Sarawak for refining through onshore pipelines. There are light rail links to Badas, and coastal roads can connect Bayi, Dudong and Bandar Seri Begawan. There is an airport in the suburbs.
