Scientific research teaching
Professor Zhang Weihua has been engaged in the research and teaching of locomotive and rolling stock design theory, vehicle system dynamics and locomotive and rolling stock test for a long time. From 1989, he participated in the preparation of the State Key Laboratory of Traction Power, the only State Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Railways. The rolling vibration test-bed is a dynamic simulation test-bed for large locomotives and vehicles with international advanced level. In the development process, firstly, it is scientifically demonstrated that the combination of rolling and vibration is the best way to predict the performance of locomotive and rolling stock. On this basis, the design scheme and key technologies of the test-bed in China are studied, which is responsible for the design of the main mechanical system, debugging, calibration and application methods of the test-bed system, so that the test-bed can fully meet the requirements of performance test and performance optimization test of locomotives and vehicles, making China the second country to carry out dynamic simulation test of locomotives and vehicles in the whole environment after Germany. The test-bed has played an important role in the development of high-speed and heavy-duty locomotives and vehicles and the speed increase of railways. The rolling vibration test-bed for railway vehicles 1998 has passed the appraisal organized by the Ministry of Railways. In the same year, its achievements won the first prize of scientific and technological progress of the Ministry of Railways and the title of "1998 Top Ten Technological Innovations in Colleges and Universities" by the State Education Commission, and won the first prize of national scientific and technological progress 1999. Professor Zhang Weihua is the second finisher of this achievement.
Professor Zhang Weihua also took the lead in studying the dynamics of pantograph-catenary system of electric locomotive in China, and put forward the theoretical calculation model of pantograph-catenary system of high-speed locomotive. As early as 199 1, he put forward the parameter matching of pantograph-catenary system for high-speed locomotives in China, which promoted the successful development of pantograph for speed-up trains in China. Professor Zhang Weihua actively advocates and implements the development of electromechanical tilting trains representing the advanced level of rolling stock, and is responsible for the development of tilting systems. The successful development of this project can accelerate the speed of existing railway lines, especially on small radius curves in mountainous areas, which will play an important role in the overall speed increase of existing lines in China. Professor Zhang Weihua also took the lead in proposing the research of new technologies for active and semi-active suspension control of locomotives and rolling stock in China, and presided over the research of the project of the Ministry of Railways.

The paper "Study on the Dynamic Behavior of Pantograph by Hybrid Simulation Method" (Study on the Dynamic Characteristics of Pantograph Based on Hybrid Simulation Method), published in the journal of RailandRapidTransit of the British Institution of Mechanical Engineers, is an innovative method of hybrid simulation of pantograph-catenary system proposed by him. The running performance and dynamic parameters of four kinds of pantographs at home and abroad are measured and analyzed. On June 28th, 2006, I received a letter from AlecOsborn, chairman of the British Institution of Mechanical Engineers, winner of the Imperial Medal and a royal engineer, and learned that his paper won the Best Original Paper Award of the British Institution of Mechanical Engineers in 2005, and won the Thomas Shoxley Gold Award, while his collaborators Mei Guiming, Wu Hechen won the Bronze Award.
