& gt [Discussion] How to revise scientific papers for students?
I said in my previous blog post: those who don't revise their papers are not qualified to be tutors; A tutor who can't correct students' papers is an incompetent tutor. Because correcting students' papers is a compulsory course for teachers (especially teachers who guide graduate students), and it is an essential part of preaching and teaching. In this regard, we have many excellent precedents. Did I mention Feng? 6? 1 Carmen corrects Qian Xuesen's papers and my tutor Guo Yonghuai corrects mine. In this respect, famous teachers are also our role models. In my blog, I have talked about how to revise students' papers bit by bit. Here I will make a simple summary, mainly for young tutors who have just started teaching, and students can also refer to it. Young students have mastered the tricks, which can make it easier for your tutor to revise your masterpiece, and also make some knowledge reserves for themselves as tutors in the future. In the past ten years, with the expansion of my research team, the workload of revising papers has gradually increased. Every year, about 20 papers (including dissertations) of students in this research group are revised, and many papers in magazines edited by me are also revised, and some experience is gradually accumulated. What is said below is experience, which is not correct. Welcome to discuss here. ? 6? 1 comprehensive inspection? 6? 1 My writing requirements for academic papers follow Yan Fu's three translation criteria: faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance); ; In other words, it requires accuracy, vividness and image. Specifically, the following points should be achieved: 1. Academic norms. Check whether the completion and expression of the thesis conform to the 7 clauses and 38 articles of the Detailed Rules for the Implementation of Academic Ethics formulated by this group, and no academic misconduct of any form is allowed; 2. Academic quality. Scientifically examine whether the overall framework, logical thinking and deductive process of the paper are perfect, and seriously examine whether all narratives are well-founded, whether the analysis of the results is detailed and whether all conclusions are appropriate; 3. Academic expression. Specifically grasp whether the expression of the paper is accurate, clear, vivid and appropriate, and never let go of any problems such as loose structure, improper use of words and misspelling of sentences. Only after the above Sandao Pass, papers are eligible for publication and submission. The following points are described. ? 6? 1 academic norms? 6? 1 The student papers I received are roughly divided into two types: meticulous operation and improvisation. The first one is carefully planned. After careful discussion on topics, innovative ideas, innovative methods and innovative achievements, the key processes were reported and reviewed in the group discussion. Such a paper is unlikely to have inherent problems in academic norms. The second kind of temporary inspiration, mainly from young people, often shines brilliantly without careful planning in advance. I attach great importance to this kind of impromptu paper, and often say that good papers come from epiphany, not the product of "planned economy" (so I laugh at those who are obsessed with planning the Nobel Prize). However, this kind of work is often a bit rough, the investigation is not sufficient, and there is a great possibility of "crashing" with people. If you are not careful, isn't it wrong to be accused of "plagiarism"? Therefore, we should always pay attention to this point and let students make up their research work. Generally speaking, from the perspective of academic norms, the first draft of the paper should focus on the following points:-Does the content "crash" with the published paper (including whether it is duplicated with my existing paper)? -Have you fully investigated and quoted previous works? —— Is there a clear mark when quoting others' achievements in the text of the paper? -Are the new results of analysis, calculation and experiment true and correct? Have you ever done it yourself? -Is the relationship between inheritance and development clear in the paper? When it is difficult for me to form a correct judgment, I have repeatedly discussed with the teachers in the group and the institute, and never let go of a doubt. In particular, some good practices were praised. For example, at the beginning of each chapter of Dr. Ge's thesis, the previous achievements are listed first, and then his own contribution is mentioned. In this way, her little progress seems clear at a glance. Others may think that the progress of each step is limited, but it is true and credible (how many Nobel Prize-level doctoral dissertations can there be like De Broglie in the world? )。 Finally, her thesis was rated as an excellent paper in Shanghai and nominated by the top 100 in China. So far, there have been no major problems in academic norms in this group of papers (of course, there are still some minor problems). ? 6? 1 academic quality? 6? 1 mainly check whether there are logical problems in the premise, hypothesis, method, derivation and analysis of the paper. The first type of paper has nip in the bud, the quality is basically guaranteed, and there are relatively few problems. The second type of paper that has not been closely discussed is mainly checked. The problems often found are:-the premise and hypothesis are not fully and clearly stated; -the thinking of the method is not clear enough; -The relationship between deduction and hypothesis is not fully revealed; —— The basis for forming important conclusions is insufficient, or the scale and frequency of experiments or simulations are not large enough, or the data are too rough, or there is a lack of uncertainty analysis of calculations or experiments. Such key problems must be corrected or improved before release. ? 6? 1 academic expression? 6? 1 I often feel that in the circle of science and engineering, the Chinese level of scholars is not as good as that of generations. Some young students nowadays can hardly write papers. So what I often do is to "correct the composition" for students. At present, the main problems existing in young people's writing scientific papers are as follows:-the structure is loose and incoherent, and it doesn't look like an academic paper as a whole; -the context is unclear, the ancestors are long-winded, and there is no "bright spot" that highlights the work; -the style of writing is not solemn, and oral and even online terms are written into the paper. For example, papers written in English are full of "It's, don't, let's" and so on; -Writing does not conform to Chinese grammar and foreign language grammar; Chinese is written in all European languages; Writing English is full of Chinglish; Even invented words and grammar, so that people in China and foreigners can't understand them. Now I usually use word to modify students' papers, asking students not to accept all my revisions at once, but to accept or reject them one by one. In this way, you can understand why I want to change, so as not to repeat the same mistakes; Of course, I should refuse anything I do wrong. There is still a lot to say about this topic. Let's talk about it later!
