Color characteristics of Dunhuang murals
First, the climate is dry all the year round, with little rain, and the mud layer of cave murals should not fall off, so most of them are preserved;

Second, because the caves in the Mogao Grottoes are all closed, or the caves are very small, the sunlight cannot be direct, and the colors are well preserved.

Third, most of the pigments used at that time were minerals, and some of them were shipped from the western regions. Therefore, the existing murals in Xixia are extremely blue and extremely green, and they are all developed with turquoise, and they will not change color for a long time, and the longer they are, the brighter they will be.

Fourth, the murals and statues there were rebuilt from generation to generation, and the damage of murals was also rebuilt by later generations. At present, many murals in the Mogao Grottoes were redrawn in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, but they were destroyed rather than rebuilt, covering up the original essence.

5. Some of the frescoes of the previous generation were destroyed after being covered by the frescoes of the next generation, but after a long time, the outside fell off but the inside was still well preserved.
