A violent collision

For some time, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the United States has been considering the consequences of a large asteroid hitting the earth.

As part of this work, if an asteroid hits Antarctica, your team needs to consider the consequences of the impact. People are worried that the impact on Antarctica may have completely different consequences from the impact on other parts of the earth.

Suppose the asteroid is about 1000 meters in diameter, and suppose that it just collided with the Antarctic continent at the South Pole.

You are asked to evaluate the impact of such an asteroid. In particular, NASA hopes to have an estimate of the number and area of casualties, the damage to marine food production in the southern hemisphere and the coastal floods caused by the large-scale melting of Antarctic polar ice rocks.
