* Move 1: Insert Cross Reference
When arranging references, position the caret at the position where quotation marks are needed in the text. Click "Insert" menu in the menu bar and select "Reference → Cross Reference" to open the cross reference dialog box.
Tip: References should be arranged according to the word number method.
In the Cross Reference dialog box, select the numbered item in the reference type, the paragraph number in the reference content (without context), and then select the numbered item to be referenced in the Numbered Item List column. In addition, check the "Insert as Hyperlink" option, so that you can link to the corresponding reference by marking the serial number (Figure 1).
Click the "Insert" button after setting the diagram 1, and the reference serial number will be automatically inserted into the corresponding citation. Because the citation format is the same as the corresponding reference serial number format, it should be changed to text annotation format. Select the annotation serial number, right-click the font, select the appropriate font and font size for the annotation serial number in the pop-up dialog box, and select superscript in the effect multi-selection box, thus adding a reference annotation (Figure 2).

* Move 2: Add endnotes
When quoting the contents of other articles in paper writing, put the caret at the end of the quotation. Select the Insert option in the menu bar, and select Insert Footnotes and Endnotes in the reference in this option (you can also press Alt+Ctrl+D to pop up the Insert Footnotes and Endnotes dialog box). Click endnote in the location selection of the pop-up dialog box to select the end of the document. In the numbering format, select the required paper reference format. If not, you can define it yourself in the custom tab. Select the serial number and apply the changes to the entire document (Figure 3).
Figure 3
Click the Insert button after setting, and the reference number corresponding to the inserted reference mark will appear at the end of the document. You can select the reference number and define it in the required format. Finally, write the author and title of the cited document in turn after the serial number, and then complete the input of the reference. If you encounter other parts that need to be quoted, just insert them according to the above steps. According to this method, when the paper is completed, the references and quotations are also completed.
When adding comments, Word will automatically synchronize the changes of comments and references, so as to keep the consistency of both parties involved. In terms of timing, the second method must be carried out in thesis writing, while the first method can be carried out after the reference is sorted out. This difference in use time also provides the author with more and more flexible choices.
