Learning Experience of "Introduction to Academic Literacy"

From one to six weeks this semester, the graduate school arranges to offer the course "Introduction to Academic Literacy". I have benefited a lot from the study of this course. I feel that this course arrangement is very necessary for us who have just entered the first year of scientific research, but we have studied from three different aspects and learned the norms of scientific research work. Although this course lasted only six weeks, we learned three different aspects of knowledge through three different teachers, namely: academic ethics and professional ethics, introduction to intellectual property rights, library and thesis writing. Through the study, I have a clear concept of the basic theories and norms of academic ethics and professional ethics, and formed a constraint on academic ethics. Have a certain understanding of the related concepts, contents and functions of intellectual property rights and the current situation of intellectual property protection in China. As a graduate student, I think the most important thing is to give me a brand-new understanding of the library and a better understanding of literature retrieval methods and literature writing skills and norms. It is necessary to arrange this course in the required courses for graduate students. Through the study of this course, it is of guiding significance and great help to future scientific research and life.

Colleges and universities are gathering places for academic talents, and they also shoulder the heavy responsibility of cultivating academic talents. As far as the current understanding is concerned, the main functions of ordinary colleges and universities should include teaching and educating people, academic research and serving the society. Among them, academic research is its foundation, because only by conducting free academic research under the guidance of scientific world outlook and methodology can we teach and educate people with scientific spirit, advanced culture and noble sentiments and serve the society with first-class achievements and first-class talents. However, the current situation of college students' academic literacy is not optimistic. Due to the influence of exam-oriented education, the reading ability of the whole people in China is very low. It is reported in the 2008 National Sampling Survey Report on Reading and Purchasing Tendency that when asked about the reasons why China people don't read, the proportion of "no reading habits or dislike reading" is as high as 34.48%. The vast majority of college students only choose to read professional academic texts in order to complete their graduation thesis, but in the process of reading, they don't pay much attention to the choice of materials and reading methods that are beneficial to them. Colleges and universities do not pay enough attention to the cultivation of students' academic literacy. In the United States, the cultivation of undergraduate academic literacy has become an important part of general education in many universities. They set up technical seminars for freshmen, which has become an important part of the core curriculum of American universities and played an important role in the transition from freshmen to academic roles of universities. However, many colleges and universities in China have no courses to cultivate college students' academic literacy, only information retrieval in university libraries.
