Some five-character poems written by scholars in the Han Dynasty have no way for the author to make textual research, so later generations call these five-character poems "ancient poems". When Prince Xiao Tong of Liang Zhaoming compiled Selected Works, he included 19 of them and named them Nineteen Ancient Poems.

From then on, Nineteen Ancient Poems was anonymously named as the proper name of this group of five-character ancient poems. Nineteen Ancient Poems are mostly lyric works of middle and lower literati, which were produced in the late Eastern Han Dynasty. Although these poems were not written by one person, their styles are roughly the same.

Nineteen ancient poems, with a group of poems as the theme, first appeared in Selected Works, not written by one person at a time. Children in the Southern Dynasties compiled from anonymous ancient poems handed down from ancient times.
