Professor Li Rui has presided over the completion of more than 20 national key scientific and technological projects in the Seventh Five-Year Plan and the Eighth Five-Year Plan, as well as bureau-level horizontal projects in Liaohe, Changqing, Anniversary, Sichuan, North China and Southwest China. A number of research results have been rated as international advanced and domestic leading. Won the second and third prizes of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the first prize of the school's scientific and technological achievements and a number of bureau-level scientific and technological achievements awards.

At present, he is responsible for the sub-project of information extraction in the national "863" and "973" multi-dimensional geospatial data management and analysis system, and the second item of the major scientific research project of Southwest Branch, "Study on high-resolution sequence stratigraphy and sand body distribution in Xiaoquan-Xinchang-Gu Feng area".

More than 30 papers have been published in core journals such as Petroleum Geophysical Exploration, Mineral Rocks, Logging Technology, Journal of Chengdu University of Technology and chinese geophysical society Yearbook, and many papers have been included by EI, GeoRef and others. There are 2 monographs, among which "Study and Application of Logging Reservoir Parameters of Fractured Carbonate Rock" won the second prize of "Excellent Science and Technology Book in Western China".

In teaching and postgraduate training, he mainly teaches undergraduate courses such as petroleum geophysical logging, exploration geophysical logging and new exploration geophysical technology. Courses such as oil and gas field development logging, logging geology and logging technology, introduction to geophysical logging and data processing of geophysical logging data are offered for doctoral and master students. He has won the second prize of individual and the second prize of collective for outstanding teaching achievements.

Main research interests: geophysical logging information processing, geophysical information mining technology and application research, well-seismic-geological oil and gas comprehensive evaluation, information management and data mining.
