Professor Mao is one of the founders of cross-cultural communication research and education in China. His main research interests are "English and culture" and "cross-cultural communication", which Professor Gu has studied for more than 20 years. These two directions belong to the branches of English studies, and they are also the main components of the development of international and foreign English studies since the 1960s. At present, almost all the annual meetings of the International English Society focus on external English learning issues such as English and culture, English and society. This kind of research can attract great attention from the international English community, not only because of its great academic and theoretical value, but also because of its wide application value. This kind of research is of great significance to China's international communication.

Professor Mao's research work has been affirmed and supported by Chinese academic circles, especially English academic circles: Gui Shichun and Liu Runqing, the famous English scholars in China, and Xu Jialu, Qi Yucun, Liu Shouhua, Shu and Zhuang Zhixiang, the founders of cross-cultural communication research in China, all regard English and Culture edited by Professor Mao as the most important representative in the field of English and cultural research in China. The academic circles also regard the book Intercultural Communication —— Hidden Culture in Foreign English Literature edited by Professor Gu as "a sign of the gradual deepening of intercultural communication research in China" or as "a breakthrough in intercultural communication research in China". The papers written by Professor Mao have been published in core academic journals such as English Teaching and Research, Foreign Literature, Foreign Languages, English World, Journal of English Institute of PLA, English and English Teaching, which have been highly praised by Xu Jialu and China.

Professor Mao has exerted a good international influence on the research and achievements of cross-cultural communication. The Global Online Computer Library Center (), headquartered in the United States, made a special page introduction to the above two books edited by Professor Gu, and more than ten international university libraries, including world-renowned universities, collected Professor Hao's works. The contemporary educational circles in Hong Kong also highly praised and fully affirmed Professor Gu's works. At the same time, Professor Mao's research work and academic achievements have also been highly affirmed by domestic colleagues and the former vice president of Beijing Foreign Studies University, the father of cross-cultural communication research in China. He was elected as the vice president of China Intercultural Communication Research Association, and assisted President Hu Wenzhong to lead the work of China Intercultural Communication Research Association.
