On the Differences between Chinese and Western Etiquette Culture
By studying the differences between Chinese and western weddings, I understand their characteristics: Western weddings are purely romantic, while China is a happy wedding; Western weddings emphasize emotion, while China emphasizes ceremony. In the west, due to different customs and habits, wedding customs with their own characteristics have also been formed. Although there are different customs, no matter where the wedding is held, it is full of blessings and laughter. The wedding day is usually considered as the most important day in many people's lives. Just for this reason, from the past to the present, many customs and superstitions have developed around wedding events, hoping to create a "perfect day!" A very common custom that is still respected today is related to an old proverb, "What is old and what is new, what is borrowed and what is blue, put a silver coin of sixpence in your shoe". This is so old that it is almost impossible to trace back to its origin. Some people think it is Victorian, others say it is even older than that. "Old people" are considered friends and family members attending the wedding. "New" is represented by the couple themselves, as a "new" combination. "Borrowed" is something to be returned from the family, such as the bride's wedding dress or the veil borrowed from her own mother. Some "blue" things are usually interpreted as representing the bride's virginity. Contrary to red, with the passage of time, red has begun to represent a woman among many men. Modern brides usually wear some blue cloth and hide it out of sight. Sixpence can be any form of money, stuffed in the bride's shoes, which can bring money and love wealth to marriage.
