He is currently a professor and doctoral supervisor of China Academy of Fine Arts and Nanjing Normal University. Fan Jingzhong began the real research, maybe earlier. There is a simple reason. When he was young, he liked painting. Later, because of his father's problems, he could not draw. At that time, I was born in a bad family, and I couldn't get the steering wheel in all aspects. I embarked on a road where I could at least entertain myself, and I began to find pleasure in books.
In the first grade of junior high school, Fan Jingzhong liked to write lyrics and was interested in "lyrics", so he began to read actively at this time. At that time, I mainly read Mr. Xia and wrote to him. He published a paper on Ci Yue in the Republic of China, but Fan Jingzhong didn't understand it at that time, and suggested that he collect it and publish it. It was 1965. The situation was not good at that time. He wrote back that his blood pressure was high and the doctor told him not to bother. At that time, I was still young and didn't understand the pressure faced by the old gentlemen. Only after the Cultural Revolution did I realize how inappropriate that letter was. I remember that in the first issue of 1965, I once read Mr. Xia's On Poetry. Poetry is a word, which has revealed a critical significance to the word, and I didn't understand its meaning until after the Cultural Revolution.
Einstein and relativity have a lifelong influence.
In junior high school, I took the initiative to read some books on dialectical materialism and historical materialism. The Soviet textbook used by my father at school has always been at home, but Fan Jingzhong read it carefully. In middle school, I wanted to study poetry, and my other hobby was reading philosophy.
1978 went to college and went through the process of going to the countryside. At the same time, Fan Jingzhong's greatest achievement in the countryside is that he met a very good teacher. He is Yang, now in the Institute of Linguistics of the Academy of Social Sciences. They have known each other for a long time. As early as middle school, they met because of their common interest in poetry and editions. When the "Cultural Revolution" came, these hobbies became obsolete, and communication turned to other topics. Yang is a mathematical genius. After Fan Jingzhong went to the countryside, he studied mathematics with him through communication. This kind of harvest is not only the general harvest of solving problems, but also the great harvest of mathematical thinking. This has a great influence on Fan Jingzhong, and also has a great relationship with his later reading experience.
Fan Jingzhong has a special advantage in going to the countryside. Students from the best middle schools in Tianjin go there. Many people bring good books and everyone borrows them from each other. He also took away the books that had been preserved during the property raid. The complete works of Shakespeare and ancient Greek tragedies were all read in the countryside. After work, I painted Notre Dame de Paris under the kerosene lamp. They often talk about Venice, do math problems together, and even make some "fallacies" about the situation. I still yearn for these, hoping to realize my dream one day.
1975 or so, Fan Jingzhong read Einstein and the theory of relativity, which can be said to have influenced his life. Through this book, Fan Jingzhong clearly saw the advantages and disadvantages of historical materialism and dialectical materialism he had studied before.
In Jiangnan, I found Gombrich.
After entering the university, Fan Jingzhong basically didn't take a class in the philosophy department of Beijing Normal University, but he didn't read less philosophy books, and all of them were partial subjects. At that time, he was studying Polish mathematical logician Talsky. 1963, Talsky's Introduction to Scientific Methodology of Logical Deduction was published by the Commercial Press. When he was in college, he did exercises in mathematical logic while reading. The other is Popper's book, which just introduced his "three practices" theory. Prior to this, in fact, the Commercial Press published a set of Selected Readings of Bourgeois Philosophical Works in the 1960s, including Popper's views on the Theory of Human Nature, which was my first contact with Popper. At the end of 1970s, his theory of "Three Practices" was introduced by Philosophical Research, and Fan Jingzhong began to read a lot of his books.
University time is very short, read a year, one's deceased father grind, went to Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts. There is a simple reason. There are too many temptations in Beijing. At that time, western films began to be staged in universities. People like Root are uneasy about their studies. I used to read poetry and always yearned for the picture of Jiangnan. In addition, I went to the countryside of Inner Mongolia and lived in Saibei for eight years, so I want to go to Xintiandi in the south.
After entering Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, Fan Jingzhong became confused about reading. Lifelong work is different from interest-based learning in the past. His teacher, Lu Hongji, said that the study of art mainly depends on oneself. Fan Jingzhong began to explore a way to read art history. According to the index method, it dates back to the time when Mr. Xia was studying in junior high school. While reading his works, he studied what he was reading. Fan Jingzhong consciously entered the reading field of edition bibliography. At that time, no one told you how to read art history and what to read. Follow the Oxford Art Guide and other reference books, and find the book with the highest overlapping frequency from the appendix to read. So I found Gombrich, my main job in the future.
Reading Gombrich's The Story of Art opened a new world. This is completely different from the art history I have seen before. Find Yang and lobby him to cooperate in translating art stories. This is the starting point of Fan Jingzhong art history work. Fan Jingzhong is thinking about the art history of China, but he wants to make a circuitous attempt from the history of foreign art. Later, Fan Jingzhong mainly studied Popper and Gombrich, who were also my jobs.
Qian Zhongshu and Chen Yinque's "Triviality"
After all, he studied poetry, and Fan Jingzhong has always been obsessed with China's old school. After 1980s, Fan Jingzhong mainly studied two people, one was Qian Zhongshu and the other was Chen Yinque. These two men had a great influence on his later academic research. As soon as Qian Zhongshu's "Pipe awl" was published, Fan Jingzhong began to read it. Before that, he had read his Synaesthesia and Biography of Poets in Song Dynasty in Literature Studies in 1950s, which was actually a biography he wrote for every poet in Selected Poems of Song Dynasty. I feel very happy after reading Qian Zhongshu's article.
In addition, I read Liu Biezhuan by Chen Yinque, which was in the early 1980s. After reading this book, Fan Jingzhong had an idea that he couldn't write any more articles. I feel that my technical and academic abilities are not enough, and I am not qualified to write any more. After that, I rarely wrote articles and basically dared not write books. Mr. Chen Yinque was blind when he wrote this book. Can he give a better version of the literature he cited? Starting from this problem, I began to make a supplementary appendix for Liu Biezhuan. Later, two books published by him and my wife, Liu Ji and Liu Ji, were the fruits of this work.
Some people criticized Qian Zhongshu for being too obscene, and Qian Zhongshu also criticized Chen Yinque for being too obscene. Interestingly, both of them were evaluated as "obscene". Fan Jingzhong doesn't think so. Fan Jingzhong reads Qian Zhongshu. His books are really trivial, but once you stand in the distance, you will find that these trivial things constitute a new knowledge universe. Fan Jingzhong doesn't think Qian Zhongshu's theoretical level is profound and brilliant, but I think it's remarkable that he used his trivial knowledge to build a new knowledge structure. Reading Chen Yinque is another interest. When he put countless trivial things into a long historical scroll, these trivial things still have their brilliant light. But what scholars lack now is precisely trivial. This gives me a strange feeling that there are many books on Taoism and too few books on learning. The difference is not theory, but real learning.
Scholars should give themselves a "vigilance needle"
Fan Jingzhong wrote that if we are still not satisfied after reading Qian Zhongshu's Synaesthesia, we can read Gombrich's Art and Illusion. You will find that Gombrich makes synaesthesia very profound in a few words; However, the synaesthesia phenomenon mentioned by Qian Zhongshu in Synesthesia Theory gives people an artistic feeling that others can't get. Therefore, reading often needs to overcome extreme and biased viewpoints and knowledge blind spots, which is what scholars need to give themselves "vigilance needles".
On the one hand, doing the work of western art history, on the other hand, reading Qian Zhongshu and Chen Yinque, as well as thread-bound books, can't be separated from Fan Jingzhong for many years. Actually, I read a lot of books, but these are three main lines, such as The Story of Art, which Fan Jingzhong has read more than 15 times. I often tell myself not to follow the fashion academically, and so does reading.
There is one person whose book Fan Jingzhong has not read, and that is Heidegger. He said he couldn't understand it and found it obscure. Many other people's works have left some impressions. There is a book written by two young people, The Legend of the Artist by Chris and Courtesy. This is an unavoidable book for research artists, and it is very broad. Recently, Shao Hong of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts did an amazing thing. He translated "Thoughts and Art in the Renaissance" by Christopher, an American renaissance master in the 20th century. The translation of this book is very difficult. Shao Hong gave a complete translation, which is very helpful for China people to understand the Renaissance.
Translating books is better than writing books.
In the field of western art history, many important works have not been translated. Compared with other disciplines, China's art history really lags behind, but some changes have taken place in recent years, especially after 2000. For example, for the study of literati painting, Yan He of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and Shenzhen Academy of Painting wrote the book "Interest, Schema and Value of Literati Painting", which gave some brand-new views on the perspective and angle of literati painting research. Two years ago, Dr. Wan Muchun of China Academy of Fine Arts studied Li Rihua, a scholar in the late Ming Dynasty. His doctoral thesis "Wandering in Wei Shui Xuan-The Painting and Calligraphy World in Jiaxing at the End of Wanli" received a high response, and this book has also been published. And my doctoral student Dong Jie, whose doctoral thesis "A Critical Study of Huzhou Prints" is a breakthrough in the study of China's printmaking history, both in theory and method.
There are great reasons for this progress, which are related to the introduction of important achievements in the study of western art history into the mainland. After reading Chen Yinke's works, Fan Jingzhong made an evaluation of himself. Translation is better than writing a book, and readers may benefit more. Because our education is too incomplete, the best years of study are drowned by the dust of history. Therefore, Fan Jingzhong has always been grateful for books.
Recently, Fan Jingzhong also wanted to reread the History of Calculus Concepts translated by the Mathematics Department of Shanghai Normal University in 1970s. It taught me a very important concept, the contradiction between continuity and separation of things. When Fan Jingzhong captures continuous paintings with separated linguistic concepts, he will encounter many problems, and the root of these problems is the history of the concept of calculus. Mathematics has a great influence on his study of art history, but it is only one aspect. Fan Jingzhong also often thinks about the greatest contribution of China civilization to world civilization. He thinks it is people's sensibility to art, which comes from poetry and China's landscape paintings.
Personal feeling
Looking back on these 30 years, Fan Jingzhong's greatest feeling is that the academic atmosphere is becoming more and more free. It is precisely because of this background that we can study with peace of mind and learn some knowledge. Looking ahead, in about 30 years, people may continue to see masters like Chen Yinque and Qian Zhongshu. Speaking of regrets, Chen Yinque stayed abroad for about 10 years. He never studies for a degree, but for learning and knowledge. In the words of westerners, he studied golden wisdom. Nowadays, people are reading more and more utilitarian, which is probably a pity to think of it. His published works include Morrow, French Symbolist Painter, Sculpture of Ancient Greece, Images and Concepts, Liu's Works, Liu's Works, Modeling of Art History, Inscriptions of Books, etc.
The main translated works are: Story of Art, Art and Illusion, Emancipation through Knowledge: Popper's Essays, Art and Science, Art and Humanities: Gombrich's Essays, Greek Art Handbook, Images and Eyes, Theory of Knowledge Towards Evolution, and Gombrich's Design Theory.
Editor-in-chief series includes: Art Garden Pearl Dust Series, Academy Series, Academic History Series and Art World Series.
In research, Professor Fan Jingzhong has undertaken the key project of the Tenth Five-Year Plan of Art Science of the Ministry of Education, namely, The History of China Engraving Art (the project leader), The Basic Theory of Art History of Nanjing Normal University, and The History of Western Art of Guangzhou Baima Advertising Company. Professor Fan Jingzhong participated in many international academic activities. 65438-0996, researcher, Institute of Oriental Studies, University of California, Berkeley. 1998 was invited to give a lecture at Heidelberg University in Germany.
Published papers: Comparative Art and Art Comparison, Research and Methodology, Sheikh's Bone Law Theory, etc.
Professor Fan Jingzhong is currently supervising doctoral students and master students. Among them, doctoral students publish more than 3 papers every year, and some of them have published works.
