Academician Chen, who is 80 years old, is still concerned about the country's energy security, and has made forward-looking suggestions to the Chinese Academy of Sciences to carry out energy substitution research. He was also assigned to work with more than a dozen academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and nearly 10 university professors to draw up proposals for China's medium and long-term energy substitution planning from 2020 to 2050, so as to provide suggestions for national decision-making. In order to accomplish this task, he can be said to have forgotten all about eating and sleeping. In his computer folder, he has collected a large number of information on energy substitution technologies in the United States, Europe, Japan and other countries and regions, which is simply a database of energy substitution. Academician Chen's serious attitude towards learning is obvious to all. Take a small example: many students in the advanced seminar on catalytic cracking were promoted to leadership positions, but he didn't lower their academic requirements at all. He personally revised their homework, and if their graduation thesis failed to meet the standard, it would never be "released". I have seen this example twice with my own eyes. For these students from all over the world, he never entertained them, nor did he inform the company to accept them, even though some of them were already business leaders.
It is both pleasant and "nervous" to assist Academician Chen in his work. I'm glad I can learn a lot from him, but I'm "nervous" that everything he arranges must be considered before you act, which is difficult to handle. According to my observation, if the work assigned by Academician Chen finally needs to submit data, the final result will definitely fall within the range of (90 5)% that he has considered in advance, which shows that he is rigorous in technical work. He told us many times that technicians only need to speak with data. When holding a review meeting, they should talk about principles and how your plan was worked out, and can't say things like "possible" and "estimated".
In recent years, under the guidance of Academician Chen, Luoyang Petrochemical Engineering Company, where I work, has been developing the technology of producing low-carbon olefins from methanol. Through this work, we can also see how he studied.
As early as 1997, Dalian Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences actively contacted us to develop the engineering technology of MTO process. The main reason is that the reaction time of MTO special catalyst is short, and fluidized bed reaction engineering technology similar to FCC process is needed. It can be said that they were attracted by Academician Chen.
Considering that the shortage of naphtha will restrict the development of olefin production in tubular cracking furnace, Academician Chen thinks this is a subject worthy of attention. Regardless of industrialization or not, he has been guiding us to develop engineering technology and seriously considering the differences between MTO process and FCC process in engineering technology. With the increase of crude oil price, MTO technology shows a good prospect of popularization and application in China, which makes us better master this core technology than other engineering companies. Through this project, we have a new understanding and experience of how Academician Chen studies, that is:
First, we must be forward-looking. Before the pilot plant in Huaxian County was built, he carefully organized us to analyze the characteristics of MTO process and catalyst in Dalian Institute of Chemical Technology, sorted out and consulted a large number of domestic and foreign patents and materials, and proposed that the industrialization test of MTO process should go through several stages, such as temperature rise, circulation, catalyst loss and process optimization, and creatively proposed to start with blank agent. Facts show that the DMTO industrialization experiment in Shaanxi Province came according to the "gateway" he designed.
Academician Chen's forward-looking strategic thinking in energy substitution and DMTO engineering technology development is a valuable asset of our company's technology development work. My experience is that engineering companies must not wait for engineering design projects to passively consider development issues, so it is difficult to get forward-looking new technology development projects and can not meet the requirements of technology development process. Major forward-looking projects and technologies must be deployed in advance.
The second is to be scientific. During the DMTO experiment, Academician Chen visited the experimental site of Huaxian County in Shaanxi Province and the laboratory site of Dalian Institute of Chemical Technology five times, totaling 1 time, and analyzed, discussed and solved the technical problems in the experiment with the three parties. What's more, he invited Comrade Dalian to Luoyang for discussion. Our field testers report the work and data to Academician Chen on the spot almost every day by telephone, and he gives analysis and guidance as on the spot. Before the end of the experiment on June 2, last year, Academician Chen rushed to the scene before the shutdown, and discussed the problems to be improved in engineering parameters and catalysts with carefully prepared data and technical ideas, which made the three parties clear their respective work directions and laid a solid foundation for the preparation of the process package after the experiment and the research work in the laboratory.
The third is to be serious. The topic "Technology and Techno-economy of Producing Low-carbon Olefins from Natural Gas or Coal" is a soft topic of China Petrochemical Science and Technology Committee, which is under the responsibility of Academician Chen, and jointly undertaken by our company, Academy of Stone Sciences and Shanghai Petrochemical Research Institute. After two coordination meetings held in Shanghai and Luoyang in June 2005 and April 2006, the first draft of the soft project was basically completed. I think this is almost a job, but Academician Chen is not satisfied with the technical and economic parts. He asked for a detailed technical and economic comparison of the production costs of coal-based syngas, natural gas-based syngas, methanol-based syngas and methanol-based olefins at home and abroad compiled by Shanghai Institute of Petrochemical Technology and our company. He asked for the method of energy consumption balance to calculate the fuel power cost of each production device, and also considered the influence of rising coal price on equipment manufacturing cost and related investment, and compared the raw material prices of coal, natural gas and naphtha at the same olefin sales price. ...
These can be said to be unprecedented depth requirements in the early stage of a soft text project. I don't think it is necessary for soft projects to meet such high requirements. I once asked Academician Chen if it was possible not to go so far. He said that at present, the domestic coal chemical industry is overheated, and some people even think that the MTO project is profitable when the coal price is 600 ~ 700 yuan/ton. Our soft topic is "research", which should not be a simple literature survey, emphasizing that the data produced by Luoyang Petrochemical Engineering Company should stand the test of time. The soft project he asked us to undertake should be a model of China Petrochemical's soft project, and the data of the soft project should not mislead the decision-making of the industry or leaders.
To this end, we have worked hard for nearly half a year. Under his careful guidance, the technical and economic analysis was completed by the end of June 2006 after repeated calculations and revisions by comrades majoring in engineering economics, and was approved by Academician Chen. This analysis can be said to be the most detailed technical and economic analysis of MTO process at present. After the data was released, it was recognized by leaders and experts in various fields.
