Xiang Yu's discussion on the artistic techniques of characterization in Historical Records.
Historical Records, as a documentary book, is mostly narrative language. The language descriptions and quotations of the characters themselves occupy a small space, but they are very unique, which fits the specific story situation and shows the unique character of the characters, and plays a key role in setting off the story atmosphere and shaping the characters. Sima Qian's use of language to describe and portray characters is a classic and obvious embodiment in the first paragraph of Biography of Xiang Yu: When Ji Xiang was in Xiang Liang, he watched the grand occasion of Qin Shihuang's trip to Huiji, and Xiang Yu said, "He can replace it", which surprised Xiang Liang. This short and clean sentence can actually reflect Xiang Yu's anti-Qin thought, and this sentence came from the mouth of Xiang Yu who was exiled at that time, but he looked up at the stars in the deep ditch and said something that ordinary people dared not say, which was enough to show his rebellion and courage, showing Xiang Yu's strange ambition and highlighting Xiang Yu's heroic and strong personality characteristics. Sima Qian carefully designed it here, taking this phrase "replace it" as a foreshadowing, echoing Xiang Yu's entry into the customs and breaking the Qin Dynasty, and creating a different "unique destiny" effect. In the famous "Wujiang River commit suicide" clip, Xiang Yu said, "How can I meet my brothers and sisters in Jiangdong when they pity me?" It is also a Millennium classic, which is intriguing. At the critical moment of his escape-Xiang Yu had a great chance of surviving at that time-Xiang Yu said such a thing, which reflected his sense of responsibility, his "fear of death" and his heavy affection and righteousness. Imagine that on the bank of Wujiang River, facing the chance of risking one's life and forgetting one's death, Xiang Yu remembered his own failure, his sons and daughters in Jiangdong who went to war with him, and then looked at the only remaining 28 down archers around him. The tragic and guilty feeling in his heart can be imagined. At this time, he said such a thing and chose to stay and accept what he thought was "fate." Even if he dies, he is fearless and dies a fair death. What a pity! Sima Qian arranged a dramatic turning point from "I want to cross the river" to "What do I want to cross the river", which made people feel resentful and infinitely sad, and the image of Xiang Yu became more vivid and three-dimensional.
