Gu has served as the director of the surgical teaching and research group of Shanghai College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the director of surgery of Longhua Hospital, the chairman of the surgical society of Shanghai Society of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the member of the fifth Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

1978 promoted to professor.

From 65438 to 0980, he served as the head teacher of the advanced class of Chinese medicine surgery teachers in national medical colleges and universities.

Over the years, Gu has made great contributions to the inheritance and development of Chinese medicine and the cultivation of surgical talents in traditional Chinese medicine. In his spare time, Gu studied authentic surgery, psychological methods and insights of surgery, and collected experience from selected topics.

Gu has a lot of works, including: Modified Therapy for Internal Hemorrhoids, Lecture Notes on Surgery of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Intermediate Lecture Notes on Surgery of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Clinical Manual of Surgery of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Selected Surgical Experiences of Gu Bohua. And published many papers.
