School of Mechanical Engineering, Wuhan University of Science and Technology, Creating an Experimental Field for Cultivating Innovative Talents
The "innovation works" on the 7th floor of the School of Mechanical Engineering of Wuhan University of Science and Technology is very lively from morning till night. When you walk in, you can often see students in groups of three or five, or discuss around desks, or process in front of lathes, milling machines and CNC machines, or print parts with 3D printers for assembly.

"There are not only various equipments here, but also the patient guidance of teachers and seniors." Student Xia Hualiang said. He usually likes to fiddle with mechanical parts, and almost always "soaks" in "innovative works" when he is not in class.

This is just a microcosm of the "experimental field" for cultivating innovative talents in the School of Mechanical Engineering of Wuhan University of Science and Technology.

At the beginning of 20 13, the School of Mechanical Engineering, as the special education reform area of Wuhan University of Science and Technology, took the lead in proposing that the cultivation of college students' innovative ability should run through the four-year curriculum teaching.

In order to run a "innovation works" for students, the School of Mechanical Engineering has set aside office space, invested 6.5438+0.5 million yuan in mechanical equipment and materials in two years, and invested more than 600,000 yuan in three years to help and reward students to apply for patents and participate in competitions.

In the words of Dean Zeng, "to cultivate innovative talents, we must have a platform to engage in innovative activities" and "be willing to spend money".

The head of the "low-headed family" is raised.

"A building is on fire and firefighters can't get close. The robot we designed flexibly climbed the first staircase into the fire and sent back the scene image through the car camera. " 20 12 Li Du, a student of excellent mechanical engineering class, stood on the platform, playing video and explaining the structure and function of the stair climbing robot.

After Li Du finished speaking, the students asked questions one after another, and some even went directly to the podium and drew pictures on the blackboard to argue with her.

In order to apply professional knowledge in study and life, Hou Yu, a teacher of Mechanical Principles, asked students to divide into groups freely, use theoretical knowledge, design what they are interested in, and show it in what way, "to see who is the most creative".

After class, the students are not to be outdone. They are busy consulting materials, designing and making courseware. During the class, there was a speech on the stage, and the audience was busy "picking holes", and the atmosphere was particularly active.

"I was amazed by the creativity of the students, and the enthusiasm for participation exceeded my expectations." Hou Yu said, "There is no' low-headed family' in the classroom."

The seminar has activated students' innovative consciousness, and many "golden ideas" have emerged. Under the guidance of the teacher, Li Du learned to accurately calculate the mass ratio of unpowered car body and wheels with professional theory, and the designed car won the second prize in the National College Student Engineering Training Competition.

Seminar also brings many challenges to teachers. "Students learn a lot of cutting-edge information after class and ask various questions in class. Teachers need to spend more time preparing lessons to deal with it. " Hou Yu said.

While explicitly requiring small class discussion in the main course, the School of Mechanical Engineering increased the class fee of the seminar by 20%, and specially raised 360,000 yuan to build nine student-centered special classrooms to create a classroom environment conducive to discussion.

Now seminars like this to stimulate students' innovative thinking are everywhere in mechanical colleges.

Undergraduate students enjoy the "treatment" of graduate students.

In March of this year, Gao Xufeng, a senior student in the School of Mechanical Engineering, went to Beijing to take part in the postgraduate re-examination of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The interview teacher asked what competitions he had participated in and what scientific research he had done. He took out the first prize of the National College Students' Engineering Training Competition, the third prize of the National College Students' robot contest, the first prize of the Hubei Physics Innovation Experiment Competition, applied for a patent 10, published 3 papers, and talked about it in Kan Kan, Kan Kan, winning the examiners' nodding.

Talking about his own growth, Gao Xufeng said: "The guidance of my tutor turned my ideas into results."

In the School of Mechanical Engineering, the head teachers of all classes are professional teachers; Pilot classes such as "excellent class", "industrial class" and "lean class" implement tutorial system, and five students are assigned a tutor; All offices and laboratories are open all day, and students can talk to their tutors as long as they have ideas.

In the second year of high school, Gao Xufeng came up with the idea of applying for a patent, but he was worried that "such a tall thing can't be handled by himself." Li Gongfu, the head teacher, encouraged him to express his ideas clearly many times.

When applying for the first patent, Li Gongfu helped Gao Xufeng to revise it repeatedly and contacted the patent agency. The successful approval of the patent inspired Gao Xufeng, who successively developed eight patents such as "air conditioning filter cleaning device", "fruit bagging automatic bag holding device" and "automatic shoe washing machine".

When preparing for the "National College Student robot contest" with his teammates, the robots of Gao Xufeng's team frequently broke down, which made everyone run around. They turned to Ceng Yong, a university teacher, and at the suggestion of Ceng Yong, changed the six control lines between the wheel and the motor into two, which not only solved the fault, but also greatly improved the accuracy.

In the face of students' inquiries, although the teacher is responsive, he does not directly tell the answer.

The "duet robot" designed by Gao Xufeng and his teammates works well indoors, but it doesn't move when it is moved outdoors. I can't find the reason after repeated pondering. The onlookers put a piece of cardboard on the sensor and the robot turned. Everyone suddenly realized that the optical fiber sensor was replaced for the robot, which completely solved the problem.

In the offices and laboratories of the School of Mechanical Engineering, teachers can often be seen to "open a small stove" for students. "We undergraduates enjoy postgraduate treatment." Gao Xufeng said.

Lucky people in the era of "double innovation"

The effect of cultivating innovative ability is obvious. In the past three years, mechanical college students have won 273 awards at or above the provincial and ministerial level, applied for 73 patents, and 5 students have successfully entered the college students' entrepreneurial base.

Xia Hualiang and his companions pounded out a "portable multifunctional mechanism principle demonstrator" in innovation works, and took the instrument to participate in the Sixth National College Students' Mechanical Innovation Design Competition, competing with more than 200 teams including many famous universities, and finally won the first prize.

And Xia Hualiang, Ding Quan taught himself the basic principle and structure by using the 3D printer purchased by the college, and bought two sets of parts with a price of 1000 yuan from the Internet, which greatly reduced the purchase cost. In his senior year, Ding Quan established Wuhan Latitude Space Culture Co., Ltd. to help customers turn their ideas into objects with 3D printers. After four months of operation, the average monthly turnover of the company has reached 6.5438+0.5 million yuan.

In Li Du's class, due to solid theoretical foundation and strong innovation ability, 8 people walked or were admitted to graduate school, and the remaining 22 people were all employed before the beginning of April this year.

In the rush of graduation season, Gao Xufeng received three pieces of good news one after another: the three units that applied for the job successively voted for the "olive branch"; He was admitted to the Chinese Academy of Sciences with the first professional retest; The seventh and eighth patents applied for were answered "yes". In the face of good news, Gao Xufeng is not surprised. "There are many students like me in our college." Gao Xufeng said, "The training of innovative talents implemented by the college has made us the lucky ones in the era of' double innovation'." (Correspondent Cheng Wei, reporter Jin Ke)
