Bilateral discussion on how to get high marks in IELTS composition
In view of the debate topics in IELTS argumentative writing, we usually introduce two ways of arranging the structure to students in teaching, namely unilateral support and bilateral discussion. The so-called unilateral support, as the name implies, is that the debate of the article is carried out from one aspect, and the author's views and reasons are in the form of "one-sided"; The characteristic of bilateral discussion articles is that the topics raised in the articles are debated from both positive and negative aspects (that is, support and opposition). Articles that discuss the structure with unilateral support and bilateral support have their own characteristics and layout routines, and different topics may be suitable for different types of structures. However, no matter what kind of structure is used as argumentative writing, arguments, arguments are essential, especially arguments. Articles with no arguments or unclear arguments will never get high marks. However, in the teaching of bilateral discussion articles, it is often found that students are very confused about how to put forward their own views. This paper first analyzes the viewpoint design of bilateral discussion articles from the perspective of how to put forward "compromise viewpoint" and "compromise scheme", and what are "compromise viewpoint" and "compromise scheme". Many IELTS writing questions are asked in the form of "Do you agree or disagree". Or "to what extent do you agree or disagree?" . Many students who have just come into contact with IELTS and even teachers think that this way of asking questions is nothing more than affirmation or negation, so the point of view of the article can only be agreement or disagreement. In fact, we can also take a "compromise" view on such issues, that is, "partially agree and partially disagree". But the premise is that we must explain some reasons in the article from both the support and opposition, and it is best to put forward a "compromise" plan. For example, the exam question asks, "Now many people do experiments with animals. Do you agree? " Candidates can discuss the reasons for and against animal experiments in the article, and finally put forward the advantages and disadvantages of animal experiments, which is a "compromise" view. In addition, the author also pointed out that whether animals can be used in experiments mainly depends on whether experiments can bring significant improvement to human life (such as helping people invent drugs to treat AIDS), which belongs to a "compromise" scheme. Second, several forms of "compromise view" and "compromise plan". So how to put forward a "compromise view"? What are the forms of compromise? Below, the author will combine the corresponding examination questions to summarize several common forms of arrangement compromise views and compromise schemes. (1) Promoting advantages and eliminating disadvantages "Promoting advantages and eliminating disadvantages" should be a relatively simple compromise scheme, which is especially commonly used in articles on advantages and disadvantages. That is to say, after analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of the things involved in the examination questions, at last, a compromise scheme of "both advantages and disadvantages, but also promoting advantages and eliminating disadvantages" is put forward. For example, the following question: The benefits of the spread of English as a "global language" will outweigh the disadvantages. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view? After discussing the advantages and disadvantages of English as a global language, the last paragraph can put forward such a compromise view: in a word, it is difficult to judge whether the advantages of English as a global language outweigh the disadvantages. What we may need to consider is how to avoid its disadvantages while accepting this positive trend. (2) Balanced development Many exam questions require candidates to discuss two viewpoints, and there is usually a question requirement of "discussing two viewpoints and giving their own opinions". Many times, the two viewpoints mentioned in the article seem to be completely opposite on the surface, but they are not contradictory. We can use the idea of "balanced development" to put forward our views. For example, some people think that cultural transactions may be destroyed when they are used as money-making attractions for tourists. Others think so. The only way to save tradition. Discuss both sides and give your opinion. After discussing the necessity of developing tourism and the importance of protecting cultural traditions, at the end of this paragraph, we should find a correct balance between developing tourism and protecting culture. I think the government has a very important role. Play here. For example, in my own country, many tourist cities have made effective development plans, which have successfully attracted a large number of tourists, while retaining their unique culture ... Sometimes, after discussing the two views of A and B, a kind of "whether to agree with A or B depends on ..." can be put forward. Whether the animal experiment mentioned above can be carried out depends on the nature of the experiment, which is such a scheme. After discussing the reasons why animals are kept as pets and eaten as food in the last paragraph, we can put forward the following views: From my point of view, there is no absolute answer to whether animals should be kept like pets or should be used as a source of food and clothes. It depends largely on what kind of animals they are. But there is no doubt that we should treat animals with humanity and keep in mind their importance to maintaining the balance of natural economy. (4) Solutions The two viewpoints discussed in many bilateral discussion articles can actually "solve contradictions" through some solutions, such as this problem: in many countries, good schools and medical facilities are only available in cities. Some people think that new teachers and doctors should work in the countryside for several years, but others think that everyone should be free to choose where they work. Discuss and give your own opinion. After discussing the advantages (narrowing the gap between urban and rural areas) and disadvantages (young people losing their freedom) of "supporting the border", we can propose such a solution: the best solution is not an order, but an encouragement. We should instill a sense of responsibility in young people and give more incentives to those who are willing to work in difficult areas, so that we can solve the problem of urban-rural differences while respecting the decisions made by new teachers or doctors.
