Importance of "Introduction to Scientific Research" to Safety Engineering Specialty

Introduction to scientific research is a compulsory course for freshmen. It mainly introduces the significance, methods, steps and academic ethics of scientific research in order to cultivate college students' basic scientific research quality, establish correct academic ethics and enable them to master basic scientific research skills such as thesis writing, patent application and subject declaration. Therefore, this course is the goal for college students to enter the door of scientific research, and its teaching quality will directly affect students' academic growth. Safety engineering, as a comprehensive interdisciplinary subject, has been set up in about 120 universities, involving mining, petroleum, transportation, military industry, construction and other industries. Taking China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing) (hereinafter referred to as "our school") as an example, due to the background of our school's coal industry, the construction of safety engineering specialty has long been dominated by coal enterprises, and the research direction is mostly to solve the problem of "one ventilation and three defenses" in coal mines (one ventilation refers to ventilation and three defenses refers to dust prevention, fire prevention and gas prevention). Therefore, the course "Introduction to Scientific Research" of safety engineering major in our school is designed to introduce the scientific research of safe coal mining, thus establishing the content setting and teaching ideas of this course.

Practice-oriented teaching scheme

Although there are many concepts in Introduction to Scientific Research, its purpose is to cultivate students' basic scientific research ability, and the cultivation of ability inevitably needs practice. Apply theoretical knowledge in practice and discover and develop new theories in practice. So this course must be based on practice. (1) Cultivate experimental ability. Our school has two national laboratories, "State Key Laboratory of Coal Resources and Safe Mining" and "State Key Laboratory of Deep Rock Mechanics", equipped with the most advanced testing instruments at home and abroad and a large number of independent research and experimental platforms. Based on these advanced experimental equipment, this course not only explains key instruments in class, but also organizes students to visit the laboratory after class and actually operate gas adsorption analyzer and other instruments, so as to deepen students' understanding of scientific research and prepare for innovative training of college students. (2) Cultivate the awareness of scientific research competition. At present, there are also some scientific research competitions in the undergraduate stage of safety major, such as the "Challenge Cup" National Extracurricular Academic and Scientific Research Works Competition for College Students and the National Practical and Innovative Works Competition for Safety Science and Engineering Majors. These competitions can not only cultivate students' innovative consciousness, but also exercise their practical ability. The author tends to compete in the formulation of teaching plan, such as the registration conditions, entry process, award-winning cases and other related teaching contents, so that students can understand the competition and eliminate the psychological obstacles caused by information asymmetry.
