A couple from different regions and cultures in a 20㎡ apartment, the conflict and collision in a space that can't be extended up, down, left and right, was born in 198 1, but designer Zhang Haiao perfectly solved the problem of height shortage through original design!

Qi invited Zhang Haiao, a former Sharp designer, to talk about how he accomplished this impossible task.

Qi: Hello, Teacher Zhang! Judging from your design experience, you have undertaken many large-scale interior design projects in the past. What impressed you by participating in this home improvement design this time?

Zhang Haiao: I think this form of rejuvenating the whole building through the transformation of old houses is consistent with the mainstream concept of "urban renewal" in the domestic architectural and planning circles. It does not push the city back, but looks forward to the future by connecting with the past based on the historical context of the city. This is the direction of "urban renewal".

Secondly, from the humanistic state of the whole society, we are more concerned about how to make people have a better home environment and change their lives through design. From my personal point of view, this is my first contact with micro interior design, hoping to challenge success.

Qi: What personal experiences did you have during the 24-hour experience session?

Zhang Haiao: There are three main ways to experience. The first is the experience of the owner's life concept, the degree of acceptance of things, and what direction he likes to design.

The second is the experience of space, what the customer wants to achieve and where the space gap can be brought to him. We are concerned about the situation and stability in space. The design of space and form lies in how to use space and the perception that space brings to the parties, which is our key experience.

The third is some details, such as whether the bathroom is wet or not, but it is not the focus of our design.

Qi: What do you know about the life of this foreign couple after the experience? How much do you know about this 20㎡ small house to be rebuilt?

Zhang Haiao: First of all, the living conditions of the client. They are born after 90, and their understanding of life is very avant-garde and positive. They are interested in cutting-edge things such as machinery and industrialization. At the same time, their requirements for space are complicated, such as holding a party. Most people may like to put it outside, but they will invite many friends to their homes. This doesn't mean that we have to divide into rooms, but we can do anything in this space.

The height of the client's house is only 3.3m, which is separated by two floors, the first floor is 2m, and the second floor is1.3m. I have experienced the sleeping height upstairs1.3m. I can't stand straight when I lie prone. When entering this space, I feel that I have no dignity, and it is easy to be satisfied when I get up. The whole space is very depressing, and I feel uncomfortable after a night's sleep, and I have a little phobia of confined space (laughs).

Qi: What are the main difficulties in the reform of this case?

Zhang Haiao: The main reason is that the story is not high enough. How to divide the total height of 3.3m? The 2-meter-high building on the first floor is actually very nervous, and it can't be pressed down again. It is impossible to meet their multi-functional needs without two floors. Moreover, the space length is very small, and the length of the living room and bedroom is only more than 5 meters. Putting a bed is basically full, so the bedroom can only develop into the air, but it faces the problem of insufficient height.

In addition, this house is an apartment building, and the upper, lower, left and right floors are stuck, so it is impossible to borrow space. It's just a real hut, harder to walk than an alley.

Qi: You just mentioned that the biggest difficulty in decoration is that the height is not enough. How was it solved later? What is your design philosophy?

Zhang Haiao: My doctoral thesis studies the variability of small-sized houses. In such a small space, a changeable idea is used, which is to exchange time for space. However, due to the lack of storey height, the original design scheme is not ideal. Then there was an inspiration: the problem of insufficient height was solved with variable floor.

For example, as a living room space during the day, the floor will rise and the activity space will be large. When you sleep at night, the floor will come down, and the height of the bedroom is enough. We have made two floors, which can be combined into five modes: living, living, entertainment, living more and learning. The heights of various modes are very comfortable. Through the change of floors, the change of different spaces is formed.

Qi: The client is a Chinese-Russian couple who are not separated due to decoration problems. What are their different needs for spatial functions? How did you help them resolve the original contradiction through design?

Zhang Haiao: Their different needs mainly lie in their different cognition of the problem. Both sides think that there is a problem with space, but they can't come up with a professional solution. For example, the bathroom is dry and wet. The host suggested adding curtains in the shower area, but the hostess disagreed and thought it was too ugly. The owner doesn't want to put the washing machine, but wants to give the clothes to his parents to wash. The hostess thinks she should be self-reliant. After design, these contradictions have been solved.

Qi: You used the "raised floor" device for the first time in the decoration. What's the magic of this device? Is the construction difficult? How did you come up with the idea of using this technology?

Zhang Haiao: The inspiration comes from "mechanical parking". Mechanical parking is a popular parking method abroad. This kind of floor was developed in cooperation with a German company. This company is the mechanical parking garage of Volkswagen in Germany. It is purely automatic and can be controlled by the App.

The feature of this device is that the floor is light and strong. The floor is made of aviation material, which is very thin, but it is very heavy. It doesn't matter if we use a big truck to test it.

Secondly, the whole device adopts threaded screw operation mode. With four threaded screws, the pole moves up and down by screwing the screws, but the floor does not move. Once the power goes out, you can hover anywhere, which is very stable. In this way, the floor is very safe.

Finally, it is very load-bearing. One floor can carry a car (2 tons), which is about 15 people, which is similar to the weight of ordinary concrete. This kind of floor needs no maintenance and can be used all the time without special circumstances. Mechanically speaking, this device has no difficulty and is not difficult to construct. The problem is that the ground is uneven. This kind of floor has high requirements for leveling the wall, so we have made great efforts to find the wall to level.

Qi: The room was originally a gypsum board partition wall, which could not play a good sound insulation role. How do you solve this problem in the decoration?

Zhang Haiao: We made two rows of cabinets on both sides of the floor, which can play the role of empty boxes and make the sound transmission less intense. Add soundproof cotton between the cabinet and the wall.

Qi: The whole room is so hot that the windows can't be opened. How do you solve the ventilation problem in different spaces?

Zhang Haiao: We replaced the windows and added a fresh air system on the basis of central air conditioning.

Qi: It turns out that the bathroom space is small, and they use different methods. What adjustments have you made to the spatial layout during the transformation? What storage space did you make?

Zhang Haiao: We separate the wet and dry bathrooms, and have separate toilets and washbasins. Next to the washbasin, we made an independent washing machine space and a small bathtub made of concrete and wood for the male host, which satisfied his habit of taking a bath when studying in Japan.

In terms of storage, two rows of large cabinets, because the floor is movable, can easily get the upper space, the whole room is equivalent to a large storage space.

Qi: Tina's family likes Western-style furniture, but it is controlled by China Classics. How do you mix these two different styles in your design?

Zhang Haiao: I didn't mix and match. In order to fit the raised floor, I chose the future industrialized style. Epoxy resin for the floor, stretched film for the ceiling and LED strips. The whole house looks pure white and has a strong sense of science and technology. Qi: How would you rate yourself for this design? What are the regrets in the whole design and transformation process?

Zhang Haiao: I think the good thing is that the realization of variable floor is very successful, from stability to variability and safety. In other designs, I feel a lot of regrets. The main reason is that the construction period is too short, many things are not done carefully enough, and big data has not yet reached the original requirements. It can be said that "the simplest place is the worst and the most difficult place is the best".
