Hunnan Campus of Northeastern University is a cluster design jointly completed by many famous domestic architects and design institutions. Among them, the library designed by China Architectural Design and Research Institute is located at the central intersection of the two main spatial axes of the new campus. As a small building that plays an important role in the whole campus space, how to realize the echo of the building to the axis and the history of Northeastern University by means has become the focus of design.

0 1 layout: integrity and separation

The external form design of the library is divided into parts, emphasizing the sense of volume. 93m is square and complete, which is in harmony with the scale of the surrounding large teaching buildings. At the same time, the design adopts the methods of "piling slopes" and "building walls" to extend the visual height of the library and make it the central building of the whole campus. The design is located at the intersection of two axes, and different coping strategies are adopted to deal with the volume, and an orderly campus axis space is formed with surrounding buildings.

The layout of the library follows the design concept of openness, efficiency and immersion. The public reading part can reach the central hall on the second floor from the main entrance of the south campus or the main entrance of the north etiquette through the indoor big steps. There are all kinds of reading spaces around the bright and transparent central hall, which are not only interconnected and easy to communicate, but also independent and quiet reading spaces.

Another important function of the library is academic communication, which needs to be separated from the public reading space in space and streamline. In the design, the east and west entrances on the first floor are reserved for academic exchanges, and the audience can reach the lecture hall, exhibition hall, training and research area for 600 people through the foyer on both sides. These functional spaces and internal reading areas are clearly divided and do not interfere with each other, thus realizing the orderly and dynamic combination of functional organizations.

02 Facade: Echo and Innovation

The library building is square, and the height-width ratio of the facade is about 1:3. The appearance emphasizes the thick and restrained campus culture and architectural temperament. While using modern architectural design language, the overall appearance pays attention to the inheritance of Northeastern University's long history and humanistic spirit. This design is based on the library of Mr. Yang Tingbao in the former Beiling Campus of Northeastern University. Whether it is the scale of the facade, the collocation of materials, or even the details of each window, it echoes the wonderful details of this historic building.

▲ The new library fully respects the original architectural vocabulary.

The whole building facade is a simple three-stage pattern. The main entrance on the ground floor retracts inward and expands horizontally on the heavy external wall, forming a grand outdoor space, which shows the attitude of the library opening to the outside world and also implies the spirit of tolerance for culture. Arrayed floor-to-ceiling windows are used in the middle and upper floors of the building facade to meet the natural lighting and ventilation needs of reading spaces at all levels to the maximum extent. The parapet of the roof is raised to form a window corridor, which is consistent with the overall facade of the building.

▲ The facade of the main entrance is local.

This design removes the complicated decoration and retains the heavy feeling of the building. The introduction of oblique angle on the plane brings "individuality" to the library. As large as the walls, roofs and steps at the entrance, as large as the non-parallel wall interfaces on both sides of the atrium; Small inclined glass on the window, even the inclined displacement of a brick in the corner and diagonal lines are the basic factors leading to these characteristics of the building. It brings an introverted sense of movement to the whole stable structure, which can make the whole building stable and smart.

Like the library in Beiling Campus, the new library uses high-quality clear water shale clay bricks as the main material for the facade. The external wall of the building adopts the sandwich insulation wall structure form of "shale clay modular brick on the outside+extruded board insulation layer with thickness of100+concrete hollow block with thickness of 200 on the inside", which is also a typical external wall form of the library. The practice of laying clay bricks with clear water not only ensures the authenticity of material logic, but also avoids all kinds of disadvantages of using wet bricks in cold areas.

Fair-faced concrete is another important material for building appearance. It appears in the eaves of windows and holes in the facade, and the rhythmic array embellishment makes the building materials layered and logically clear. The 80-meter-long clear water cornice above the main entrance extends from outdoor to indoor, stretching the atmosphere and naturally forming a striking "flying wing" shape on the main facade of the north and south. The appearance of the whole library is regular, dynamic, heavy and light.

Atrium: Space and Lighting

Together with the floor-to-ceiling window array of the library facade, it constitutes the natural light environment of the library and is the atrium space in the center of the building. It naturally divides the interfaces of different reading areas, and the interface around this central space is also the reading seating area facing the atrium.

Considering the local climate characteristics in Shenyang, the design is cautious about the use of glass curtain wall. The east and west ends of the atrium are one of the few transparent glass curtain walls in the whole building. It forms a strong contrast between reality and reality with the thick fair-faced brick wall on the facade. Natural light shines from here on the reading table connecting the layers.

The roof of the whole atrium is covered by a long Y-shaped concrete beam, and a zigzag skylight is formed between the beam and the plate, so that natural light can be refracted into the indoor atrium space. There is a drainage ditch and a snow sweeping path between the top skylights, which is also convenient for the skylights to reach and open from outside the roof, which is the result of taking into account lighting, ventilation and daily maintenance.
