Laizhou city is rich in carved stones such as talc and azurite. Among them, the green frozen stone is transparent as jade, hence the name Laizhou jade, and its carving is generally called Laizhou jade carving. Laizhou folk sculpture art has a long history and has been handed down from generation to generation. Its carving is fine and skillful. Talc unearthed in the tombs of the Song Dynasty in China is exquisitely sculpted, skillfully carved, and has a thin and even wall. The sculpture of "people" in Ming Dynasty is round and simple, and it is a treasure handed down from generation to generation. At the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, talc carving workshops appeared in the villages around the county, specializing in carving bottles, boxes or figures, animals, flowers and birds and other works. Among them, the crafts of furnaces and boxes carved by artists in West wuli village have reached the level of "four buttons" and "eight buttons" (that is, one box is transposed on four sides and two boxes are transposed on eight sides). In the west gate of Yecheng, there are firms specializing in the acquisition and distribution of sculptures, such as Zengxing, Jilai, Shuntai, Gongyi and Ludong. At this point, Laizhou jade carving entered Beijing, Tianjin, Qingdao and other cities, and went to the international market.
In 1950s, based on Dayuanjia Sculpture Group, Yexian (now Laizhou) Sculpture Factory was established, and Laizhou jade carving entered the stage of mass production. In terms of technology, in addition to inheriting the tradition, it also draws on the advantages of Qingtian stone carving, tooth carving and sculpture. In addition to talc and chrysolite, there are also Maogong stone, bamboo leaf stone, leopard stone and extracted star stone. In terms of product categories, in addition to traditional products, flowers, landscapes, buttons and seals, antique cultural relics, figures and animal sculptures have been added, with more than 120 varieties and more than 2,000 patterns. In terms of production scale, in addition to the carving factory, it also drives more than 40 carving groups in more than 30 villages to form a team of thousands of people; In terms of sales channels, it changed from domestic sales to export sales, and sold to more than 20 countries and regions in Europe, America and Asia, ranking first in the country in terms of export volume. Since the reform and opening up, with the increase of international demand for carving, the jade carving team has been further expanded, and a number of jade carving rookies and fine jade carvings have emerged, enjoying a high reputation at home and abroad.
