The college, formerly known as Taiyuan Iron and Steel School and Shanxi Mining School, was founded in 1952. It is one of the earliest five vocational schools in Shanxi Province.
The college now covers an area of 880 mu, with a total construction area of 323,700 square meters and total fixed assets of 325 million yuan. Paper books have a collection of 877,600 books. It has three campuses: Longtan Campus, Xutan Campus and Tang Huai Campus. Full-time students 12000.

Official website shows that the Institute has been elected as the vice-chairman unit of China Metallurgical Education Society and China Coal Education Society for two consecutive years, the chairman unit of Vocational Education Branch of China Metallurgical Education Society, and the executive deputy director unit of the National Metallurgical Industry and Coal Industry Teaching Steering Committee.
With excellent results, it was selected as the construction unit of high-quality higher vocational colleges in Shanxi Province, and it was the first batch of pilot units for comprehensive reform of "three rounds of education" in Shanxi Province (the only higher vocational college in Shanxi Province).
