The topic is about to begin. I downloaded some English documents to read, but I found that my ability to read English documents is really poor: I usually spend half an hour reading a Chinese document, but it takes four or five hours to read an English document of the same length or a little longer, and I forget the front when I see the back. I really can't move! Obviously, the lack of English literature reading ability has become a problem that I have to pay attention to and solve. At the same time, I think this may be a problem that many novices will encounter. So what is the cause of this problem? What's the solution? After analysis, I summed up some methods to improve the reading level of English literature.
First of all, lack of relevant knowledge. If China literature is hard to understand, it is not surprising that English literature is hard to understand. In fact, even if there are many documents translated into Chinese, I find it difficult for me to understand, because there are a lot of knowledge and terms I don't understand. For example, if you don't know the principle of rocket electrophoresis, how can you understand the paragraph containing this method? Therefore, the problem of basic knowledge is the primary problem that causes reading difficulties, and the solution is naturally to learn relevant knowledge well.
Secondly, there are many words I don't know. If you can't read, you can't understand. However, this is a relatively easy problem to solve, because there are so many commonly used words in the same topic that you will be familiar with them after reading more. For this problem, the solution is also very simple, that is, remember common words and read more literature, and you will naturally understand. For medical papers, there is a very useful software, Dictionary of New Medicine, with a huge vocabulary, which seems to be more than 300,000! Moreover, it has many functions, such as taking words from PDF documents, creating a new word book for easy review and so on. Almost all medical words can be found.
In addition, medical papers (and other scientific papers should be the same) have a feature that there are many long sentences and many difficult sentences. Often a sentence is as long as thirty or forty words or more, and after reading a sentence, it is often unintelligible. The pain of reading such a paper is self-evident. When I read English articles from China or Japan, I find them easy to read, while articles written by authors from some British and American countries are much more difficult, because the sentences written by authors from China and Japan are shorter and simpler. The way to solve this problem is to enhance your ability to read long and difficult sentences. The first method is to recommend GRE &;; GMAT Reading Difficult Sentences Course, the core idea of the book is: Long and difficult sentences are difficult to understand because you usually read too little and are unfamiliar, but repeated reading of long and difficult sentences makes perfect, so it will be easier to understand next time. He summed up more than 100 long sentences in GRE and GMAT, and said that as long as readers read each sentence repeatedly until they feel very natural, their reading ability will be greatly improved. I tried this method and found it really effective and simple. After reading the long sentences of GRE for three or four days, I went to see the papers that I found difficult to understand before, and found it much easier! I was really happy at that time, because it had such obvious effects before meeting the requirements he said. The second method is to find out some particularly difficult sentences or paragraphs (some like Yang Peng's method) from the test paper, and then read them repeatedly until there are no obstacles. The third is to find some representative papers, which are more difficult to understand, and read them repeatedly until the speed is the same as reading Chinese articles.
Sometimes you don't need to read the full text in detail, so the ability to read quickly and skip is very important. Most people are not used to reading this way, because they seldom practice it. Therefore, in order to improve reading speed, we should also carry out corresponding training. The first method is to read important contents quickly, such as titles, abstracts, subheadings and other capitalized places. The second is to find specific information in the article, such as finding specific words, names, places, or some method. Third, practice speed reading. You can refer to books on speed reading or Yang Peng's books. In fact, it is relatively simple, that is, we usually only look at one word at a time, and now we look at several words or even one sentence at a time, which naturally speeds up the speed.
In fact, the reading ability of English literature is still a question of practice making perfect. If you read more, you will get faster. Although many methods are summarized above, none of them will have a good effect without a lot of reading as the basis. So, what I have to do next is a lot of reading and practice!
