After 1930, he went to teach at Qingdao University. He wrote many comments on the development of modern novels in China. 1September, 933, took over the literary supplement of Tianjin Ta Kung Pao and co-edited it with Xiao Gan two years later. Around this important local literary town at that time, a group of Beijing writers headed by him formed. Before the Anti-Japanese War, more than 20 works were published, including Zhou Shi and Tiger? ","Little Scene under the Moon ","Eight Horses ",etc., as well as the important anthology" Selected Novels of Shen Congwen ". The novella Border Town was published in 1934, which describes the love tragedy of simple living and Cui Cui who support the old ferry man and his granddaughter Cui Cui, and marks the maturity of his novel.
After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, he went to Yunnan via Wuhan, Changsha and Xiangxi. When passing through Yuanling, he wrote the prose Xiangxi and the novel Long River (volume 1). Later, he taught at Kunming National Southwest Associated University. 1945 and returned to Beijing to teach at Peking University. At the same time, literary supplements of Ta Kung Pao and Yi Shi Daily also began to be edited.
After 1949, he has been engaged in cultural relics for a long time. He has studied the history of ancient Chinese costumes and material culture in the Museum of Chinese History and the Palace Museum. 1960 published articles such as "Dragon and Phoenix Art". 1978 to the Institute of History, China Academy of Social Sciences. As a writer, he was invited to attend the Third National Literary Congress and was added as a member of the National Federation of Literary and Art Circles. 1980 giving lectures in America. 198 1 year published the monograph "research on ancient Chinese costumes", which lasted 15 years. In recent years, his literary works have been vigorously sorted out and published.
His works have constructed a Xiangxi world full of artistic charm and its corresponding urban upper-class social system, showing his unique spirit of cultural criticism and his ideal of remolding national character. His praise for the natural beauty of his hometown, the beauty of human feelings and the primitive vitality of the villagers shows that he viewed the painful process of China's entry into modern civilization from the standpoint of rural China. He mainly created the local lyric novel style, and his prose inherited the tradition of ancient travel notes, which was simple and moving and had an impact on contemporary literature.
