Abstract: Idioms are the essence of language and the carrier of culture. They are concise in form, rich in meaning and vivid in image. Because different nationalities have different cultures, English and Chinese idioms have their own cultural characteristics. Therefore, this paper analyzes the cultural differences between English and Chinese idioms from five different aspects. The translation of idioms is not only the transformation of language, but also the transmission of culture. Based on this feature, this paper discusses two main translation strategies in idiom translation.

A Comparative Study of Chinese and English Idioms from the Cultural Perspective

Idioms are a special part of language. They have a feature that they can express one or more meanings with only a few words. As English learners, it is difficult for us to remain faithful, accurate and elegant in translating idioms. As the cultural differences between China and Britain become the main obstacles in idiom translation, it is becoming more and more important to understand and learn the culture of English-speaking countries. This paper attempts to compare English and Chinese idioms from the perspective of cultural differences in order to help English learners translate idioms. This paper first introduces the definition of culture, points out four aspects of cultural significance in this study, and introduces the definitions of Chinese and English idioms. Then it expounds the differences between Chinese and English idioms in four aspects from the cultural point of view: religious belief, historical allusions, values and geographical environment.
