If you have never been exposed to published papers, you may be a little confused when preparing for the first time. What are CN serial number, ISSN serial number, core, periodical, JCR branch, provincial periodical ...? These are not clear, how can we choose the right journals to contribute? So this article will give you some basic knowledge of the periodical industry, so that you will not be confused by various terms when preparing for the exam.
Not much to say, here are some common periodical terms.
I. Academic journals
First of all, what is an academic journal? Generally speaking, the evaluation of professional titles by in-service authors, the evaluation of excellent students' authors, and the award-winning publication of papers need to be published in academic journals.
When it comes to periodicals, we may first think of Readers, Youth Digest and Yilin, which are published for the public. These periodicals are stories, essays, interviews with people and other articles that are easy to understand and suitable for the public to read. They belong to non-academic journals. They have a large number of subscriptions and a lot of traffic. They can earn income through subscriptions and advertisements, and their business model is commercial.
Academic journals, as the name implies, are journals that publish academic articles in various professional fields. Such articles are usually professional, boring and obscure. Compared with popular books, the subscription volume is very small. Except for universities, scientific research institutions, libraries and some professional-related researchers, almost no one will subscribe. No subscription, no traffic, no advertising revenue. Therefore, in addition to some state-funded journals (core,
Two. Formal/informal periodicals
Official periodicals shall be examined and approved by the Press and Publication Administration and the State Science and Technology Commission within the agreed number, and shall be incorporated into the "unified domestic serial number" for public distribution throughout the country.
Informal periodical refers to the periodical that has been approved by the administrative department to receive "Internal Approval" as an internal communication in the industry. Generally limited to internal communication, it is not published publicly, but it is also a legal periodical.
Simply put, the difference between the two is whether it is publicly issued. Generally, regular periodicals are from informal periodicals.
Three. CN publications and ISSN publications
CN (informal abbreviation of China) is a unified serial publication number (domestic serial number) and ISSN (international standard serial number).
CN publications refer to publications registered in China and publicly distributed in China. The format of CN serial number is as follows: xx -CN: XX-XXXX/G4. Because the serial numbers are marked with the letter "CN", everyone is used to calling them CN publications.
Publication with serial number refers to a publication registered outside China and publicly distributed at home and abroad. The format of ISSN serial number is as follows -ISSN: xxxx-xxxx. Because the serial number is marked "ISSN", people are used to calling it ISSN publication.
At present, there are CN numbers and ISSN numbers in domestic regular academic journals.
Fourth, the thesis database (search website)
At present, there are three mainstream paper collection platforms in China: CNKI, Wanfang and VIP. CNKI has the highest recognition and the most expensive page fee. Some units will require authors to publish periodicals included in CNKI, which requires comprehensive consideration of the requirements of the unit and itself.
Special note: Some authors have a misunderstanding that only the periodicals included in HowNet are regular periodicals, which is completely wrong! Which database a journal is included in is decided by each magazine through consultation with the database, and its regularity is not necessarily related to whether it is included in HowNet. As long as the periodical is available in the State Press and Publication Administration and updated (at least) normally in HowNet, Wanfang and VIP, it is a regular periodical.
V. Publishing cycle
Publishing cycle is the frequency of publication, including weekly, xunkan, bimonthly, monthly, bimonthly, quarterly and so on. (Of course, there are also semi-annual and annual publications). As the name implies, once a week, once every ten days, once every half month. ......
Generally speaking, the longer the publishing cycle, the higher the quality, while those with frequent publishing cycles (weekly and Xunkan) mainly aim at profit, with many manuscripts, short review time and low requirements, and basic review and topic selection can be passed, while monthly and bimonthly magazines pay attention to the quality of articles while charging fees, with long review time and high requirements, so the level of periodicals is generally not low.
Special reminder: individual units have requirements on the publication cycle of periodicals when judging, and only recognize monthly magazines and above, but not weekly magazines and periodicals. Therefore, when submitting a manuscript, everyone should pay attention to whether the unit and the school have such requirements in advance, so as to avoid discovering that the publication does not meet the requirements after publication.
Sixth, the date and time of publication
The publication date refers to the time when the periodical was rented and marked, while the publication time refers to the time when the periodical was actually published. You can look at this article, and the differences between them and the matters needing attention when submitting are described in detail.
Seven, periodical grade
The grades of foreign periodicals mainly include SCI, SSCI, A& etc. The core HCI and EI (source journals) are very difficult to publish. There are EI meetings, both good and bad, and the quality of the articles collected is uneven. In addition, there are general international journals.
Domestic journals are generally divided into the following grades according to quality: core and non-core undergraduate journals, specialist journals and general journals, and the quality and publishing difficulty decrease in turn.
1. Core journals
China has several recognized systems: South Nuclear, North Nuclear, CSCD, and Science and Technology Nuclear.
1. Nantah Core, Nanjing University's Source Journal of China Social Science Citation Index (CSSCI), also known as C Journal;
2. The core of Peking University, the "Chinese Core Journal" of Peking University Library;
3.CSCD, Information Center of China Academy of Sciences, "Source Journals of Chinese Science Citation Database";
4. The statistical source core, the statistical source journal of scientific papers of China Institute of Science and Technology Information (CSTPCD), also known as "China Scientific Core Journal", referred to as "scientific core";
The following kinds of recognition are not high, or in fact they are not the core at all:
5. The core of Wuhan University, RCCSE, was developed by China Scientific Evaluation Research Center of Wuhan University, and the recognition in the south is higher than that in the north;
6. Scientific citation database.
7. The core of China Academy of Social Sciences (China Humanities and Social Sciences Citation Database, CHSSCD) was reviewed and published by China Social Sciences Evaluation Institute.
In terms of influence, Nanxin ranks high among its peers, and it is more difficult to be selected and published than Beixin.
2. magazines
Journals generally refer to journals sponsored by major universities, which are divided into undergraduate journals and specialist journals according to different levels of universities.
Logs are a special category. From the perspective of the organizer in charge, it is difficult to say whether it belongs to the provincial or national level, because although universities in China are distributed in various provinces and cities, they are all under the unified management of the Ministry of Education. But according to the convention, it is generally classified as follows: if a periodical is core, it is regarded as a core periodical, not simply saying that it is a periodical. Non-core journals are divided into undergraduate journals and specialist journals. Generally speaking, undergraduate journals are superior to specialist journals in all aspects.
3. General problems
A general journal is a general journal. Simply put, except for core journals, undergraduate journals and specialized journals, the rest are general journals.
According to the collected database, ordinary periodicals can be divided into HowNet-collected periodicals, Wanfang periodicals and VIP periodicals.
From the perspective of impact factors, ordinary journals can be divided into influential journals and non-influential journals.
The so-called impact factor refers to the total number of citations of papers published in a journal in the first two years of the reporting year (JCR year) divided by the total number of papers published in this journal in these two years, which is an internationally accepted journal evaluation index.
Generally speaking, the higher the impact factor, the greater the academic influence and the higher the quality of the journal.
"General" does not mean that the quality of journals with impact factors is absolutely higher than that of journals without impact factors. The quality of a periodical should be comprehensively judged by combining the periodical grade, the time of peer review, the publishing cycle and the number of articles collected in each issue.
We usually take the influencing factors of HowNet as the standard, and others such as Wanfang also have influencing factors. However, because HowNet has the highest authority, when we talk about the impact factors of journals, it is HowNet by default. Unless a high-end periodical has only ten thousand square meters, then the influencing factors of this periodical can only depend on ten thousand square meters.
Eight. Provincial/national periodicals
Provincial periodicals refer to periodicals sponsored by provincial institutions, including departments, commissions, offices, bureaus and institutes of provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government, as well as provincial social organizations and institutions, such as XX in Heilongjiang Province, XX in Maanshan City and Guizhou Provincial Committee of the Communist Youth League. [ 1]
National periodicals refer to periodicals sponsored by state institutions, including the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the State Council and their subordinate departments, or China Academy of Sciences, China Academy of Social Sciences, China Association for Science and Technology, democratic parties and national people's organizations. [2]
Generally, we only divide general periodicals into provincial periodicals and national periodicals, and it is also very simple to distinguish between provincial periodicals and national periodicals. Just go directly to the following two links. As long as one of the competent organizers is a national unit, then the periodical is a national periodical, otherwise it is a provincial periodical.
It can be seen that the difference between provincial periodicals and national periodicals lies only in whether the competent organizer is provincial or national, which has nothing to do with the quality of periodicals. It doesn't mean that national periodicals are necessarily superior to provincial periodicals, and there has never been such a classification of periodicals at the national level. Even the General Administration of Taxation has not divided core and non-core periodicals, but only abided by this classification standard by default.
Therefore, unless the unit or school expressly stipulates that it is necessary to publish national periodicals or it is more rewarding to publish national periodicals (which is actually a misunderstanding), it is not necessary to worry too much about whether a periodical is a national periodical, and it should not be used as a criterion for selecting periodicals.
Special reminder: The above classification criteria are valid in most cases, but there are exceptions. For example, the requirement of professional title evaluation of engineers in a certain area is that as long as it is above the municipal level, then the periodicals with the word "city" in the organizers such as Reading and Writing may be recognized as municipal journals.
