Reflections on management reading
Robbins' Management (Seventh Edition) is a classic management book, and it is enduring from the number of editions. Such a good book, if you don't write anything after reading it, it's just like not reading it. Although the title of this article is thoughts after reading, it is more exactly reading notes, because there are not only theories but also many cases in the book. When reading, I always think of something else. After understanding, some problems can extend far out of control and are not limited to the scope of management. But in this article, there will be nothing far-fetched. First of all, I want to talk about some theories in the book. Then we should integrate theory with practice and express some superficial views on some problems in China's management field.
First, the structure of the book. This book has six parts. The first part is the introduction, which mainly tells the management and managers and the management theory so far. The second part, untitled, mainly talks about some influencing factors of management in today's environment, including organizational culture, global environment, social responsibility and management ethics; The last four chapters explain the four functions of management process theory in the order of planning, organizing, leading and controlling. An entrepreneurial unit should be inserted behind each article, and it should also be analyzed according to the functional order; There is a thinking unit of management in e-commerce environment in the practice part at the back of each chapter. There are many theories in the book, but there are also many things that make readers think, such as morality and responsibility. It's like a little label, reminding you from time to time. The same is true of e-commerce. The current new trend broadens readers' horizons, and entrepreneurial units are just like teaching you to start a business step by step, which reminds me of the name of another book, From Excellence to Excellence. I feel a sense of accomplishment and I feel that I have learned something. The structure of the book is reasonable, and the writing is very boring, which makes people interested in reading. Management is a highly practical subject, and teaching and learning without cases are incomplete.
China's academic achievements in management are not much, on the one hand, because of his natural disadvantages; The other, and most important, is that he lacks attitude and methods. Lacking the basic attitude of learning, it is said that a professor in a domestic university has published 13 books a year, and he is so happy that he thinks he is very good. But in foreign countries, especially in western developed countries, a professor may not publish a book until 13, so it is self-evident how valuable books published by others are. At present, the whole society in China is in a very impetuous state of mind. There are writers and gunmen, and it is best to read foreign original works on the computer. Some translated books are not human words at all, so it is better not to read them. Domestic books are copied from each other, copied words and cut pictures, and then published, without any summary of their own experience. The same is true of universities, which really shouldn't be. Papers are copied from each other, and so are textbooks. The management textbook of a university is considered to be good, which was compiled and published by our own school. If you look at the content, it is basically separated from this management book. Of course, it is more local, but there is no difference in essence. How can you teach and educate people? You may be a little poor, but you can write as much as possible, so that a theoretical system can be gradually established. There are no enterprises with good management practices in China, but after all, they are slowly exploring and perfecting, so as to find a management theory suitable for China. Second, there is no way. The practice of enterprises in China is constantly confirming these classical theories, but it lacks sufficient argumentation. There are too many unclear things, relationships and human feelings. These are far superior to law and rationality in China society, and there is no legal concept. This is a kind of social and cultural influence, which cannot be changed by just a few books, but this culture has seriously hindered the development of China, and there is no habit of using qualitative and quantitative research in academic fields.
Second, the core concept. Of course, management should start with the definition of management and managers. The definition of management in this book is: the process of coordinating work with or through others to achieve organizational goals efficiently and effectively. This definition can be divided into several levels. First, management is a process (leading to the theory of management function). Second, management should be with or through others (some people say that the core of management process is leadership, and the core of leadership is motivation). Third, management should be efficient and effective (do the right thing, do the right thing). Four, the purpose of management is to achieve organizational goals (what is an organization, how to achieve the goal is decision-making and strategic management. This definition is highly generalized and summative, including the most important theories. But the definition of this thing is very interesting, because, especially in management, there are probably more than one different definition of 100 all over the world, and there is no conclusion in the west. Therefore, this kind of thing should not be delved into, just understand what he really wants to say, because every definition has its focus, and Robbins emphasizes, or values, the second point mentioned above-others, him. This part is what China enterprises lack most. The only child has no sense of team since he was a child, and he still likes to fight in his own culture. As the saying goes, it's fun to fight with heaven and earth and people. There are still some concepts, managers, organizations, etc. I don't want to copy them here. It doesn't make much sense, because these concepts are all similar.
Third, the concept of characteristics. The book written by Robbins is a summary of predecessors' concepts and his own development of these theories, which I think is worth mentioning.
