The Story of Convenience Store-7-Eleven

As early as 1927, 7-Eleven initiated the concept of convenience store in Southland Ice Company in Dallas, Texas. In addition to selling ice cubes to refrigerate food, an enterprising ice dock employee began to provide milk, bread and eggs when the grocery store closed on Sunday and night. This new business concept has produced satisfied customers, increased sales, and thus convenient retail was born!

The company's first convenience store was called Tote'm Store, because customers "packed up" their purchases, and some stores even showed off real Alaskan totem poles in front. In 1946, Tote'm became 7-Eleven to reflect the new extended business hours of the store-from 7: 00 a.m. to 1 1 p.m., 7 days a week. The company name of this company was changed from Southland Company to 7-Eleven Company on 1999.

Today, 7-Eleven is the undisputed leader in the convenience retail industry, with more than 30,000 stores in the United States and 18 other countries, and its total sales in 2005 exceeded $43 billion.

The company has about 7 100 stores in North America operated by franchisees or licensees. 7-Eleven, Inc. and its licensees and affiliates operate more than 30,000 7-Eleven and other convenience stores in Japan, Australia, Mexico, Taiwan Province, Singapore, Canada, the Philippines, Sweden, Denmark, South Korea, Thailand, Norway, Turkey, Malaysia, China and Puerto Rico.
