Ci originated from Qu Zi Ci in the Tang Dynasty, with different sentences, which are closely combined with music and can be sung. Due to the development of commerce, the prosperity of cities and the increasing number of citizens in Song Dynasty, the words that can be sung are more suitable for the entertainment life of cities than other forms of literary works. At that time, class contradictions and ethnic contradictions were sharp, and irregular sentences were more convenient to express people's thoughts of worrying about the country and the people, so they gradually flourished and replaced poetry as the mainstream of literature.

The Tang Dynasty inherited the poems of the Southern Dynasties, but the theme was narrow and the pursuit of flowery rhetoric. It was not until the appearance of Yang Jiong, Lu and Luo, who were known as the "four outstanding figures", that the scope of expression of poetry was expanded, from Taige to Guanshan and Saimo, showing majestic momentum and broad mind. Compared with classical poetry, classical poetry is divided into four words, five words, seven words and miscellaneous words, without the restriction of levelness and duality.
