1. Doctoral qualification examination
Postgraduates with master's and doctor's degrees are given a comprehensive examination before entering the doctoral stage, focusing on whether they have the basic theory, professional knowledge and scientific research ability necessary for innovative research work.
2. Opening report
The topic selection of doctoral thesis should be based on the understanding of the present situation and development trend at home and abroad in this research field, and should reflect the frontier and advanced nature of the subject field. The opening report time is determined by the doctoral supervisor according to the progress of doctoral work, and should generally be completed in the second academic year.
Doctoral students should read no less than 50 related documents before giving a project report, which must include more than half of foreign documents.
The opening report is in the form of public defense, and at least 3 professors, including tutors, are required to attend. Whether the score of the opening report is passed or not, those who fail should postpone the opening report for 3-6 months. Generally, it should be completed at the end of the second semester, at least 2 years from the date of applying for defense.
3. Mid-term examination of examination papers
Generally, the mid-term examination of dissertation should be conducted in the fourth semester after the opening report. Doctoral students should report research results to an investigation team composed of 3-5 professors, listen to questions and discuss suggestions for improvement. The investigation team should comprehensively evaluate the comprehensive ability of graduate students and the progress of thesis work. Whether the mid-term exam results are passed or not will be postponed for 3-6 months.
4. Before the thesis defense
After the dissertation work is basically completed, it is necessary to pre-defend the dissertation, and those who pass can apply for a formal defense. Pre-defense must be conducted after the opening report is passed for one and a half years, and the specific requirements shall be implemented in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Measures for the Administration of Pre-defense of Doctoral Dissertations of Beijing Jiaotong University.
