The China Office of the International Society for Life Sciences recently organized a retrospective survey to study the incidence of malnutrition in hospitalized patients, the influence of nutritional treatment methods on the incidence of malnutrition and the cost-effectiveness of enteral nutrition. According to the analysis of body mass index (BMI), serum albumin and hemoglobin, the incidence of malnutrition at admission was lower than that before admission, but the incidence of malnutrition at discharge was higher than that before admission. It is pointed out that this change is due to the fact that the medical department did not take nutritional treatment, or nutritional treatment could not meet the metabolic needs, which led to an increase in the incidence of malnutrition.
Whether nutritional therapy is needed, especially the role of enteral nutrition in the treatment of diseases, involves many factors such as ethics, morality and economy. In the United States, all enteral nutrition preparations are classified as medicines and foods, and medical food management is established separately, while in Europe, they are special-purpose medical foods with the same connotation. There is no special classification in China, some are registered as drugs, some are managed according to food, and there is no unified law for effective management. It is the simplest, economical and effective method to correct malnutrition in hospitalized patients by enteral nutrition, especially in line with the physiological process of human digestion, absorption and metabolism. Enteral nutrition is recognized and accepted all over the world.
Because enteral nutrition preparation is more difficult to manage than parenteral nutrition, it is easy to be abused, which increases the management difficulty. Therefore, the relevant institutions should not make decisions to grant, restrict or cancel nutritional treatment based on limited expenses or resources. Successful management experience of other countries should be absorbed, such as whether enteral nutrition preparations are used by nutritionists or clinicians. This will have a far-reaching impact on the popularization of enteral nutrition.
