Academic research in Nanjing Museum
In 1930s and 1940s, a group of famous experts and scholars gathered in Nanjing Museum, including Wu Jinding, Xia Nai, Zeng and others. They either independently or cooperated with Academia Sinica to investigate, excavate and study ethnic groups, folk customs, historical sites and folk arts in Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, Gansu and Xinjiang, and presided over or participated in them. Through acquisition, allocation and excavation, 200,000 to 300,000 pieces of China's first-class treasures have been collected, including paintings of emperors of past dynasties, maps of Tang and Ming dynasties, Mao and Wuding bronzes and other precious national treasures.

In the early 1950s, Nanjing Museum, as a major part of the East China Cultural Relics Team, presided over or participated in the excavation of a number of cultural sites and tombs in Jiangsu, Fujian, Zhejiang, Anhui, Shandong and other places. Zeng, Yin and Zhao excavated a large number of tombs, such as the Erling Site in the South Tang Dynasty and the Qingliangang Site, which were quite influential. After 1954, archaeological investigation and excavation were mainly carried out in Jiangsu.

After the 1990s, the archaeological work of Nanjing Museum focused on the study of regional culture, and carried out scientific archaeological excavations on large-scale sites, and achieved fruitful results. By the end of 2007, sponsored by Nanjing Museum, Zhaoling Mountain Site in Kunshan (199 1), Longqiuzhuang Site in Gaoyou (1993), Tang Cheng Site in Yangzhou (1993) and the Western Han Dynasty King Chu Mausoleum in Lion Mountain in Xuzhou (1). Ten archaeological excavations, such as Gaochengdun Site in Jiangyin (1999), Tenghualuo Site in Lianyungang (2000), the tomb of Yue nobles in Hongshan, Wuxi (2004) and the mound tomb in Jintan, Jurong, Jiangsu (2005), have been successively rated as "Top Ten Archaeological Discoveries in China", ranking among the top in China. Among them, the archaeological excavations of Teng Hualuo and Jurong Jintan mound tombs also won the second prize of national field archaeology and the third prize of archaeological excavation of Sanxingcun site, which showed the archaeological strength and level of Nanjing Museum.

On the basis of archaeological excavations, the archaeologists of Nanjing Museum have compiled and published large-scale excavation reports over the years, such as Archaeological Report Near Nanjing, Neolithic Sites in East China, Two Tombs in Southern Tang Dynasty, Excavation Report of Ancient Stone Tombs in Yinan, Yingying in North Yin and Yang, Tomb of Pengshan Cliff in Sichuan, Tomb of Hongshan in Wuxi, etc. Research on Cultural Relics Protection Technology The research on cultural relics protection technology of Nanjing Museum began in the middle and late 1970s. It undertook the protection of cultural relics collected in Jiangsu Province and on the ground, and rescued and protected a large number of precious cultural relics for neighboring provinces with strong technical advantages. Since 200 1, there have been 14 projects such as "old paper protection technology", "NMF- 1 bactericide" and "compound Chinese herbal pesticide" which have won various awards from the state, the Ministry of Culture and the Provincial Department of Culture. The strengthening technology of fragile paper mesh film is at the leading level in China, and the research results such as "new materials for bronze protection" and "new drugs for termite control" have been popularized and applied throughout the country, and remarkable benefits have been achieved. The investigation and collection of ethnic folklore is another feature of the establishment of Nanbo Institute, and it is the only institution in the National Museum that has ethnic folklore research. It originated from the investigation of Yi, Naxi, Miao, Dai, Yi and other ethnic minorities in Sichuan, Kang and Guizhou provinces in the 1940s, mainly focusing on the folk customs of the Han nationality in Taihu Lake area, and achieved gratifying results. Academic activities and periodicals Jiangsu Museum Society, Archaeological Society, Folklore Society and Wu Culture Society all belong to Nanjing Museum. Since the end of 1970s, relying on the Society, they have successively carried out research activities such as "Prehistoric Culture Research in the Lower Yangtze River", "Dream of Red Mansions" and "Wu Culture Research".
