The life of the character
T82 "The Romance of the West Chamber" stamp was created at 1979, completed at the end of 1980, and issued at 1983 in February. Wang Shuhui's first color comic book The West Chamber was painted on 1954, which lasted nearly 30 years.
1953, after the promulgation of the new Marriage Law of the People's Republic of China, People's Fine Arts Publishing House gave Wang Shuhui the task of creating the comic book The Romance of the West Chamber. Of course, the choice of this theme has the meaning of cooperating with publicity, but at that time, probably no one thought that this comic book, which came out a year later, became a masterpiece in the history of new China fine arts. Experts commented on this set of comic books of The West Chamber 16, which is characterized by vivid characters, poetic environment, elegant and beautiful colors and smooth and vigorous lines. In order to draw this group of works, Wang Shuhui devoted almost all his decades of experience in painting ladies and his own rich feelings. 10 years later, this work won the first prize of painting in the first National Comic Creation Award.
1957, Wang Shuhui started writing again and created 128 pieces of The West Chamber. If the previous painting "The West Chamber" required to surpass the ancients, then the requirement of this creation is to surpass itself. However, during the Cultural Revolution, this painting was judged as "poisonous weeds", and 1 18 original paintings were destroyed, only 10 painting was kept in China Art Museum.
At the beginning of 1979, The Romance of the West Chamber was republished. Like the first edition, the printing volume has exceeded 654.38+million copies, which has become a treasure sought by comic collectors.
198 1 The first issue of China Pictorial published 16 all the meticulous and colorful comics "The West Chamber", which was very popular.
During the Fourth National Literature Conference from 65438 to 0979, Wang Shuhui accepted the invitation of Liu Shuoren on behalf of the Stamp Distribution Bureau and promised to create the stamp of The West Chamber. She thought that although she was still painting ladies' paintings, it was the first time that she painted ladies' paintings specifically for stamps. She planned her own schedule and decided to finish the manuscript before the end of the second year.
Sure enough, Wang Shuhui completed the four stamp drawings of Jing Ke, Tingqin, Book of Rites and Changting as scheduled. These four scenes have all appeared in the original comic book 16. Considering the characteristics and limitations of stamps, the characters are enlarged as much as possible, occupying the main position of the picture, while ignoring minor characters and some scenes.
There is another episode: a musician once pointed out to the painter that there is a small mistake in the picture of "Listening to the Qin" in the West Chamber 16 version: Zhang Sheng plays the piano with his index finger, but he should actually use his middle finger. This reminder, which was remembered by Wang Shuhui for many years, was finally corrected in this re-creation.
By the time 1983 "The Romance of the West Chamber" stamps were issued, Wang Shuhui was already 7 1 year old and accepted Niu, a closed female student.
Appreciation of Excellent Comic Books in Fifty Years (edited by Duan Xi and published by Yunnan Fine Arts Publishing House) said: "The Romance of the West Chamber is skillful in painting techniques, with smooth lines, natural twists and turns, elegant and smart, like gold and silver threads, and full of threads. The characterization is vivid and delicate, with emotional concern and elegant colors. Especially the towering bun, oval face and fluttering skirt; Zhang Junrui's simple appearance, honest personality and infatuation with Yingying are unforgettable. The environment, rigorous courtyard painting, standardized and accurate perspective ratio have all become models for future generations to study and study, and are also the style characteristics of Wang Shuhui's painting art. "
Think carefully about the weak women in the history of China, such as Meng Jiangnv, Liu Lanzhi, Zhu Yingtai, Cui Yingying and Lin Daiyu. They are all laughing, crying, loving and hating, living and dying for their real life. Wang Shuhui defended them and shaped them. Wang Shuhui's lovely girls and maids are full of human dignity.
Wang Shuhui painted "Although according to Yan Ming, he doesn't fly to heaven to cure demons;" It is the oriental female beauty with low eyebrows and drooping sleeves, and it is the combination of external beauty and internal beauty full of personality strength. As a daughter, Wang Shuhui deeply realized the deep suffering and sacred indignation of women in China. After burning and refining, her emotional world has cooled into an idea, a feeling and a quality, which is extraordinary and sacred.
The characters in her works are expressive, elegant and quiet, and have a long rhyme. Cui Yingying is beautiful and gentle, affectionate, the matchmaker is alert and kind, full of interest, and Zhang Sheng is crazy. Through her smooth and fine lines, she shows vivid figure, movements and expressions. The fully displayed characters are vivid, vivid and vivid in the painting, and they are willing to have a refreshing aesthetic feeling, which will not be forgotten for a long time after reading. Wang Shuhui is an outstanding meticulous painter in China and a famous woman. A comic book "The West Chamber" won the first prize of the first comic creation. Mr Wang Shuhui wrote carefully, calmly and slowly. The line drawing is a little disrespectful, and the back is carefully constructed. It has the characteristics of meticulous Chinese painting, and is mostly used as a strong leaf painting, which is called "the wind in the Five Dynasties". Her works are full of drama. Looking at her paintings is like enjoying a play. The heroine in Mr. Wang's works is always so gentle and dignified, beautiful and intelligent, but there are always some obstacles around her. For example, Cui Mu in The West Chamber, Zhu Yuan in Butterfly Lovers, Liu Lanzhi's brother in Peacock Flying Southeast and so on. Through their portrayal of this supporting role, the hero's loyalty and chastity are more prominent. At the same time, Mr. Wang vividly portrayed some characters who secretly helped the protagonist, such as the matchmaker in West and the silver heart in Liang. They didn't isolate the protagonist, but also played an important role in the story, and their scenes were also in Qinghai. Mr. Wang Shuhui is best at showing women with China's classical temperament. The female images in her works not only have the characteristics of beauty and kindness, but also give them a loyal and strong personality. Mr. Wang is best at expressing and describing love stories with tragic colors, and expressing tragedy without losing romance. Western Story, Butterfly Lovers, Peacock Flying Southeast and Life and Death Card are typical representatives of his painting style. At the same time, Mr. Wang is also good at portraying legendary female heroes, such as Mu in Young Woman and Hua Shulan in Mulan Joining the Army. Throughout his works, it can be called a typical Mr. Wang's North School meticulous comic works and a typical representative of the North School meticulous comic works.
Wang Shuhui Classic Comics Collection (Shaanxi People's Fine Arts Publishing House) has collected eight classic works, such as Peacock Flying Southeast, Romance of the West Chamber and Butterfly Lovers. Wang Shuhui, a famous modern meticulous figure and female painter.
On painting skills
The author and Mr Wang Shuhui have been neighbors for 27 years. As long as I can remember, as soon as Mr. Shu Hui got off work, I went to Mr. Shu Hui's house to "work" and stayed at her house almost every day. Mr. Wang once told me many anecdotes, allusions, life and customs of princes and nobles; I have talked about anecdotes, myths and legends in Tang poetry, Song ci, Yuanqu and so on. Mr. Shu Hui also told me about her painting methods and significance, her skills and precautions in using pen and ink, her favorite precautions and knowledge in mounting, and introduced in detail the collection and rarity of her painting tools, painting materials, diamonds and silk.
In recent years, during the auction preview, the author also found many fakes of Mr. Wang Shuhui's works. The following author will introduce some identification skills of Mr. Wang Shuhui's works to readers:
(of students) studying under the direct guidance of a teacher or professor.
Wang Shuhui likes painting since he was a child. /kloc-at the age of 0/5, he was introduced by Mr. Wu Guangyu, a famous painter in China and the younger brother of his second brother-in-law, and joined the Beijing (Ping) Chinese Painting Research Association. In the Chinese painting research society, he was appraised and guided by Mr. Zhou Yanan, director of the Antiquities Exhibition Center (predecessor of the Palace Museum), Professor Sun of Beijing Women's Normal University, and Mr. Xu and Wu Guangyu, masters of Chinese painting.
Among these people, Mr. Wang's most important teachers are Xu and Wu Guangyu Xu is a famous meticulous figure painter and redologist in China, and his figure modeling and brushwork have a great influence. Wu Guangyu has taught Wang Shuhui in many aspects, such as the layout of pictures and the handling of colors.
Subject content
The themes and contents of Mr. Wang Shuhui's works are mainly historical figures, stories and legends and ancient ladies. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Mr. Wang Shuhui had two creative peaks, and almost all his important works were created in these two periods. The first creative peak was from 195 1 to 1957. The main works born in this period are: 16 color comic book The West Chamber, 128 sketch comic book The West Chamber, Peacock Flying Southeast and Ink Painting. The second peak period is from 1978 to 1985. The main works born in this period are: the picture on the plug by Zhao Jun, Lin Daiyu, the drunken peony by Han Xiangyun, Baoqin Lixue, Baochai, Xifeng and Li Wan. Mr. Wang Shuhui's comic book The West Chamber won the first prize of the first national comic book award.
On February 2 1 and February 2 1983, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the People's Republic of China issued a set of four special stamps numbered T-82, namely, Variety, Listening to the Qin, The Book of Rites and The Pavilion. This set of stamps won the best special stamp of 1983; China's best stamp 1983 selected by Japanese philatelic magazine; British Philatelic Weekly and British Foreign Stamp Monthly selected the best China stamps and other awards.
Style and painting
Mr. Wang Shuhui's painting intention and style mainly draw lessons from western painting techniques, which can not only absorb the flavor of the times in traditional techniques, but also maintain the essence of China traditional culture. Niu, a famous contemporary meticulous painter, commented on Mr. Niu's meticulous and colorful techniques, smooth brushwork, delicate brushwork, elegant and fresh colors, beautiful ladies' modeling, exquisite and dignified figures, vivid and vivid images, accurate and rigorous demeanor, costumes, etc. Teacher Wang's painting scene design is general, concise and focused on the moment of grasping, which can fully express the essence of the story, and the tolerance and charm of the characters are also vividly displayed.
Mr. Wang has never been married, so there is always a deep silence in the picture Moreover, many fakes nowadays are dry and dry. After liberation, Mr. Wang's life was generally comfortable and basically unaffected. So the picture atmosphere is always quiet. At present, many forgeries can do nothing but comfort.
technical characteristics
Mr. Wang Shuhui's painting method has distinct characteristics:
1. Tick off: The bun, hairstyle, dress and ribbon of Mr. Wang's works are marked by line drawing first. Many places even need to draw several layers. In order to draw a thick face, it is generally necessary to draw the front first, then the back, and then the front.
Some fakes we see are basically not painted in light ink first, and then emphasized in thick ink.
2. Open your face: Mr. Shu Hui's line drawing style is not limited to physical modeling, but flexible, elegant and exquisite. His pen and ink are very particular. When his clothes are printed and polished, his pen is full of gas, soft but not flattering. Its characters have accurate modeling structure, slender posture, steady gait, natural and unrestrained modeling, harmonious colors, gorgeous costumes and elegance. An important feature of the figure's posture in her works is that the figure's upper body leans forward slightly, but the overall center of gravity of the human body remains normal.
In recent years, the fake goods on the market, the accuracy of the character modeling structure is poor, and no character's upper body leans forward slightly. Even if the figure's upper body leans forward slightly, its overall center of gravity is out of balance.
3. Coloring: Mr. Shu Hui's paintings are beautiful, elegant, quiet and natural. And the color is elegant, thick and light. The collocation of colors is harmonious and unified. Generally speaking, Mr. Wang's works are rich in colors, and there are hundreds of colors in the picture. There are also based on the emotional needs of the picture, and Liao Liao uses twenty or thirty colors. Mr. Wang's rendering and masking sometimes need to be done several times. It is often to dye a layer of light ink first, then color it on the light ink, and apply it several times from shallow to deep. The transition from light color to dark color is regulated by water.
It's hard to use so many colors for a fake. Most of the forgeries we can see only use one or twenty colors, basically no more than 30.

His works include comic books Peacock Flying Southeast, butterfly lovers, Life and Death Card, Young Woman General and so on. Single figure paintings include Wang Zhaojun, Li Qingzhao and Mulan. In his later years, he mainly created the characters in A Dream of Red Mansions. His masterpiece The Romance of the West Chamber has won a reputation far beyond national boundaries, and the issue of the special stamps of The Romance of the West Chamber has once again caused a sensation at home and abroad. As for Wang Shuhui, the famous painter Pan Zi said: "Wang Shuhui is a famous female painter of the older generation, and she is also the first person to engage in comic book creation in the form of meticulous painting after the founding of New China, who has made great contributions to the improvement of comic book art.. Her "The West Chamber" uses extremely skillful traditional techniques to portray characters delicately and vividly, and reproduces this love story that has been told through the ages. It is an epoch-making masterpiece. The history of China comic books that can be handed down together with Wang Shifu's The West Chamber will always record her creative achievements and this masterpiece. "
Personality assessment
Wang Shuhui's painting themes are mainly ancient ladies, with subtle and slightly exaggerated characters, vigorous line drawing, clean ink, bright and elegant colors, sweeping away the decadent painting style since the Ming and Qing Dynasties and pioneering the atmosphere. Wang Shuhui didn't learn from the past. In her words, she said, "Go around the aisle and go your own way". At the same time, she does not exclude the western painting experience, and reasonably absorbs the creative skills such as proportion, anatomy and perspective. Especially in the overall value orientation, she pursues the classical aesthetic taste of pure China and the vivid charm of "to the public" in meticulous painting. This makes Wang Shuhui a master of contemporary meticulous painting.
Deeply miss
Date: 2012/09-14
I just finished writing a paper "Re-understanding of Wang Shuhui's Fine-brush Painting of Ladies", but I still feel unwilling, so I wrote another blog post-the paper is too rational, and the blog post can be lyrical.
I saw a documentary about Mr. Wang in my early years. An ordinary old lady lived a simple life, but she created such a beautiful and elegant female image, which made her fall in love with her own art. Unfortunately, Mr. Wang had died in the small town at that time for many years, and her picture album could not be found at all. I am eager for patchwork. I collect printed products of tofu blocks from newspapers and publications. Until 1996 came to Beijing, I finally bought Wang Shuhui, a famous modern Chinese painter, published by People's Fine Arts Publishing House. I love it like a treasure, and I have carefully copied The West Chamber, Luo Shen, Playing Parrot and Wang Xifeng. Before I went to college, almost all the pictures in the book came once, and I was intoxicated. I never hide myself, and I can't hide myself.
Now, I have also become a professional meticulous painter and researcher. Although I no longer paint Mr. Wang's theme of ancient ladies, looking back at his art, I still feel very charming and interesting, and there are also many questions worth pondering-why did a painting that lasted for thousands of years and fell to the bottom for hundreds of years regain its luster and be so widely welcomed by this old painter? What are the social, genetic and individual reasons? What is the relationship between her art and ancient ladies' painting, and contemporary meticulous figure painting, and what is the enlightenment to contemporary meticulous painting?
Questioning these is actually the deep reason for the modern revival of meticulous painting. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Mr. Wang's works flew into thousands of households in the form of comic books and New Year pictures. The circulation is huge, and it also brings beauty to the public. However, until today, there are few theoretical research articles about her art. Everyone knows her name and loves her paintings, but she doesn't know why. This is a great pity. Perhaps the times change too fast for us to remember, or perhaps the leverage orientation of economic factors makes us only pay attention to interests and vanity. Mr. Wang has created a lot of works in his life, but most of them have contributed to the country, and few of them have entered the market. Mr. Wang is alone, has no children to fight for her rights or publicity, and has no market operation. Now he is naturally more and more marginalized. Although this is the law, it is also a helpless move.
In the article "Re-understanding of meticulous painting of ladies", according to my own experience and memory, I analyzed the beauty, inheritance, innovation and characteristics of Mr. Wang's paintings of ladies from the aspects of modeling, color, lines, perspective, artistic conception and dramatic factors, like martial arts. Through the analysis of these superficial forms, I have extracted several main arguments, such as: First, Wang Shuhui's art of painting ladies vulgarized the painting of ladies which originally belonged to the literati's interest, making it popular with the public, and also connecting meticulous painting with "local flavor" and "popularization", with new performance content and appreciation objects, which made meticulous painting have to jump out of the imitation and appreciation of literati since the Ming and Qing Dynasties. At the same time, her works pay attention to the writing of lines, the complementarity of ink and color, the creation of clean and beautiful color effects, the creation of artistic conception, and the elegance of folk art styles such as New Year pictures and comic books.
Secondly, Wang Shuhui created vivid and flesh-and-blood characters, and made great efforts to depict their temperament and inner world. She inherited the excellent tradition of "vivid portrayal" and blended the sadness of women, so that the female images in her works were full of the brilliance of human nature, rather than the pen and ink symbols of literati entertaining themselves since the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
Thirdly, her adjustment of painting methods has enhanced the ability of displaying pictures and expressed secular beauty, which is consistent with the transformation of modern painting and people's aesthetics in China.
Meticulous painting, a kind of painting, has experienced ups and downs for thousands of years, which is something worth pondering. In recent years, the number of meticulous painting in major art exhibitions has overwhelmed the freehand brushwork in ink painting, and more and more people are engaged in meticulous painting creation, which has attracted more and more attention. The prosperity of meticulous painting seems to have surpassed any period in history, but the problem is obvious. Some people are worried about the future of meticulous painting, and one of the problems is insufficient accumulation. With certain realistic skills and energy, young people have made a big picture and been selected for an art exhibition, which has become a utilitarian shortcut. However, the cultural character, artistic charm and responsibility of meticulous painting are seriously lacking, thin, wide and empty. Many people draw meticulous painting, but they can't deeply understand what meticulous painting is, its ins and outs, and its ups and downs of cultural memory. In fact, meticulous painting did not directly jump from the picture of a beautiful woman wearing a hairpin to Chen Lao's face, and then directly jumped to today's Tang Yongli and He Jiaying. The twists and turns during this period may contain the real mystery that has lasted for thousands of years. Finally, the paper emphasizes that my research and concern for Mr. Wang Shuhui only want to leave more accumulation and memory for the development of meticulous painting, so as not to make the development of meticulous painting really become passive and narrow. Of course, I don't want an old artist who has made outstanding contributions to meticulous painting all his life to be forgotten in such an era of developed media and network.
Not long ago, I read an article written by teacher Li Jiang in 1994, "Is it clean and normal?" As an old colleague of Mr. Jiang's, he described the details of Mr. Jiang's life, including his dying situation. I sigh even more, and feel that I should do something for this old gentleman. Mr. Wang mentioned in his article that his wish to hold a commemorative exhibition, hold a seminar and publish a collection of paintings after Mr. Wang's death has not been realized until today, and I think it will be more difficult to realize it in the future. I sent my article "Re-understanding of Wang Shuhui's painting art" to the magazine "Culture and Art Research" sponsored by Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture for publication, and commemorated her in the academic journals of her ancestral home. That's all I can do. I hope Mr. Wang Can can be comforted.
Market quotation of works
In the art market, Wang Shuhui's works have been circulating in the market for a long time. As early as the Republic of China, she made a living by selling paintings. His works are favored by collectors because of their combination of form and spirit, elegance and popularity. But in the 1990s, after the rise of domestic art auctions, Wang Shuhui's works rarely appeared, occasionally appeared, and the price was not very high. 1996, her "The Night Banquet" was sold at Guardian auction in China for 22,000 yuan, and in the same year, her "Feng Chun leaning on the stone wood" was sold at Hanhai auction in Beijing for 12000 yuan. In recent years, Wang Shuhui's works have rarely appeared in domestic and foreign markets. In 2002, she photographed the fan of her "Liu Yin Appreciate the Lotus" for 654.38+00000 yuan. Four screens (47 cm× 29.5 cm each) of her masterpiece A Dream of Red Mansions were sold to 68,000 RMB by Han Hai, and the price was average. This is because the circulation of her works in the market is very small, so it is impossible to form a fixed price in the market. However, the author thinks that Wang Shuhui is an accomplished female painter, who is famous for her meticulous painting. Her works are skillful, with smooth and vivid lines, bright colors and great charm. In particular, every work she created consumes a lot of time and energy, and there are not many works she has survived. Therefore, in the long run, Wang Shuhui's works still have high appreciation and collection value.
identification point
Mr Wang Shuhui has been a sober smoker all his life. He smokes at least two and a half to three packs of cigarettes every day. If he works from 8 am to 2 am, he is more likely to smoke up to four packs of cigarettes. The first thing she wakes up in the morning is to light a cigarette, and the last thing at night is to put it out. When thinking, especially when drawing, one hand holds a pen and the other hand holds a cigarette. Mr. Wang also likes to drink gold medal brandy, and he can finish a bottle almost every day with more than a catty. Because smokers are very addicted to cigarettes, they think that filters will reduce the "strength" of cigarettes. Sometimes cigarettes with filters are sent by others, and the filters will be removed. So when she paints with her mouth, there will be smoke and wine mixed in, and then when she paints, there will be smoke and wine mixed in. This is also an important feature of Mr. Appraisal's works. There are alcohol and tobacco components in color marks and ink marks.
Mr. Wang has a small kettle as big as two fists, which is usually used to boil water when making tea. Because she lives alone, she doesn't need much water. She often grinds ink with boiling water left over from making tea. In other words, Mr. Wang grinds ink and cinnabar with burnt cold water. This is also a factor in evaluating Mr. Wang's works. Readers may wish to try it for themselves. Grinding ink and paint with boiling cold water is completely different from grinding ink and drawing with ordinary tap water.
The ink used by Mr. Wang contains precious Chinese medicines such as musk and borneol. This is also an important feature to identify Mr. Shu Hui's works. There are no ingredients such as musk and borneol in the fake ink.
There are few long inscriptions in Mr. Wang's paintings, and most of them are four-character, five-character and seven-character names. At most, it is a seven-melody song, a seven-line song, or a love affair and a mulberry song. There are few big articles, dozens or even hundreds of words. This is not to say that her handwriting is not good. On the contrary, Mr. Wang Can is a master of calligraphy, and there is no long inscription, which is an evaluation factor.
Mr. Wang's comic books, even for the cover, generally have no age and title. As for Mr. Wang's traditional Chinese paintings, the works before 1949 generally use the Gregorian calendar year. The works from 1949 to 1965 have both the years of the main branch and the AD. Works written after 1966 are generally marked by the year of AD, and are generally written in "19××××××", and rarely only "year×××".
Before 1949, the inscriptions of Chinese paintings were generally a straight line with the signatures of "Wang Shuhui School" and "Yin Shan Wang Shuhui School". Many works during the Cultural Revolution were untitled. After 1978, the longer title is usually a line of titles or poems, the other line is the year signed by Wang Shuhui, Yin Shan Wang Shuhui, Yin Shan Wang Shuhui or Wang Shuhui, and the shorter title is a straight line. Among them, there are more paintings with the theme of "Wang Shuhui System" and "Yin Shan and Wang Shuhui System" than with the theme of "Wang Shuhui Works", which is also a feature. Inscriptions are usually in regular script, and a few paintings have the name or title of regular script, such as company (small) seal, year, signature, etc.
Moreover, in Mr. Wang's paintings, few seals are stamped with cymbals. Generally, one or two cymbals are used to print, but rarely more than three. Mr. Wang's works rarely use casual printing (corner printing), and many times there is even a white name printing. Above Mr. Wang's painting, there is no difference.
Mr Wang Shuhui's works are generally small. Take silk works as an example. Vertical works are about 60 to 70 cm high and 50 cm wide. The works of banners are generally about 60 to 70 cm long and 50 cm high. Paper works will be slightly larger, but the maximum size is generally not more than 85 to 90 cm.
