-Farewell my concubine
The movie Farewell My Concubine tells the life of Cheng Dieyi (Little Bean), which can be said to be a legendary life. When I was a child, my mother cut off my finger and sold it to the troupe. I started training in hell, and then I became a corner after many twists and turns. I thought I would never leave Duan Xiaolou (Little Stone), and I could sing Farewell My Concubine all my life. Unfortunately, things are unpredictable. Dieyi was born in troubled times. He was in a chaotic period in China and had a rough life. At the end of Qing Dynasty, when he first appeared on the stage, he was insulted by an old man who retired. During the Anti-Japanese War, in order to save Duan Xiaolou and sing for Japanese officers, Duan Xiaolou was prompted to marry a brothel woman, Ju Xian. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, he was arrested and interrogated as a traitor for his previous plays. During the Cultural Revolution, he was criticized; After smashing the Gang of Four, he also took his own life. His death, like his life, was tragic but beautiful. At the last moment of his life, he sang farewell to my concubine with his own life and committed suicide in his arms, just like concubine Yu committed suicide in front of the overlord of Chu.
The soundtrack of this movie is great. They highlight the personality of the characters, render the atmosphere of the film and arouse the emotions of the audience. A lot of music is played by China Peking Opera Orchestra and China Central Orchestra.
The following is my simple appreciation of the music of this movie:
The film uses flashback technique, and its title is the cooperation between Cheng Dieyi and Duan Xiaolou after smashing the Gang of Four for more than 20 years. After exchanging pleasantries with the stage supervisor, the unique performance music of Beijing opera was sharply but tactfully remembered, and the music returned to Die Yi's childhood. The buzzing sound shows that Butterfly Clothes was at a loss at that time.
When his mother cut off his sixth finger in order to make Butterfly Dress look like a troupe, the deep drums and humming sounded again until the unique strings of Beijing opera sounded, suggesting that Butterfly Dress and drama could not be separated from each other's lives in doomed love. The tension rendered at this moment, as well as the short-term deception of Butterfly Clothes later, shows the great changes in Butterfly Clothes' psychology.
This buzzing sound fills the whole film, and whenever the characters in the film are depressed, it always rings, constantly reminding the past.
Similarly, there is vocal music during the apprenticeship. Although the ditty is sad and tactful, it is well documented and powerful. Just like Cheng Dieyi's life, though bumpy and helpless, he never gave up his drama and dignity. In my opinion, when he read "I am Nv Jiao's mother, I am not a man's son", it was not that he put down his dignity, but that he really took responsibility and made his own choice.
What is indispensable is the small drum sound, which, though light, knocks on the heart. From the first time I said I was Nv Jiao E to the time when Duan Xiaolou was in the brothel, all this showed the changes in the owner's mind. Just like the drums, it looks like a commotion, but it is a torrent in my heart.
Contrary to the small drum, it is wind music, which is long and long. It actively shows the mental state of Dieyi's life. That is not a dead heart, but a numbness, waiting to be awakened again.
Since Xiao Douzi and Xiao Shi sang the first "Farewell My Concubine", the film has officially cut into the theme. The Peking Opera Farewell My Concubine sings Chu's chivalrous tenderness and Yu Ji's perseverance and never give up. It is this kind of singing that attracted Zhang Gonggong and Yuan He's painful life.
When Xiao Douzi was recruited to Zhang Gonggong's side, the festive music played by the band was in sharp contrast to the insult suffered by Xiao Douzi, which appeared many times in the film. After Butterfly Clothes was sung to the Japanese, inside the wall, singing and dancing were still going on. Outside the wall, Duan Xiaolou looked down on Cheng Dieyi's singing skills. After liberation, the chorus of "Singing the Motherland" resounded throughout the city, but Dieyi lost everything she owned little by little. Including "Farewell My Concubine" in the fourth grade, Cheng Dieyi was replaced on the stage at any time, but because of the thunderous applause from the audience, the grief of Butterfly Clothes at that time was compared; Even when Dieyi went to Zhanggongfu again, she was all smiles, but with the sound of "sugar-coated gourd" reminding Dieyi of Xiaolaizi, she was still accompanied by a trace of sadness. This asymmetric artistic expression just shows the helplessness, anger and compromise of the master to the injustice of the world.
When Xiao Douzi came back from a snowy day with her baby, the music sounded with the bell, which was very contemporary. It was a unique sad tune in the late Qing dynasty and the early Republic of China, with the desolation of the Qing court and a hint of' decadent voice' in the turbulent period. This piece of music shows the shock and sadness that Butterfly Clothes first understood.
At the end of the film, people can't ignore this revolutionary song with a sense of the times. The appearance of this song "Singing the Motherland" seems to satirize the characters in the play. When Xiao Si and Die Yi quarreled and ran away from home, they sang this song as they ran. After Juxian was betrayed by Duan Xiaolou, when she hanged herself in a red robe, this song "Singing the Motherland" was still playing on the radio; When Dieyi finally committed suicide, it was nothing more than the song "Singing the Motherland" that sounded in the class.
