A Comparative Study of Sun Yat-sen's Thought on People's Livelihood and the Communist Party of China (CPC)'s Thought on People's Livelihood in the New Period
The Three People's Principles (nationality, civil rights and people's livelihood) are the core of Sun Yat-sen's social reform thought. In Sun Yat-sen's view, people's livelihood is the destination of the Three People's Principles. In his life, nationalism and civil rights have been partially or partially realized, and only people's livelihood is his lifelong goal. In the whole Three People's Principles system, people's livelihood is the most misunderstood. In Sun Yat-sen's mind, the so-called people's livelihood is socialism and a translation of British socialism. After repeated consideration, he thinks it is more appropriate to translate the western vocabulary socialism from Japan into people's livelihood. However, in the whole Three People's Principles system, people's livelihood is the most misunderstood and criticized issue. Sun Yat-sen had to spend a lot of energy to explain and expound his people's livelihood. People's misunderstanding is not groundless. In the process of expounding people's livelihood, Sun Yat-sen said a lot of things that criticized capitalists and the capitalist system. From these words, it is not difficult to draw the view that people's livelihood is against capitalists. Therefore, Sun Yat-sen has repeatedly stated that people's livelihood is not against capital and capitalists, but against the monopoly of social wealth by a few people to prevent social abuses caused by capitalist monopoly. From some of Sun Yat-sen's explanations, we can see that people's livelihood is socialism, or national socialism, collectivism, or * * * productism; People's livelihood is not against capital and capitalists, but against capitalist autocracy. Sometimes it is said that a few capitalists are excluded, ordinary people are opposed to capitalists, or they are unfair to capitalists. Sometimes it is said that people's livelihood means equality between the rich and the poor, and equality between the rich and the poor is required throughout the country. Sometimes it is a misunderstanding to say that the rich and the poor are equal. Sometimes it is said that people's livelihood is a revolutionary means to eliminate social revolution or class war; Sometimes people's livelihood is to enjoy the happiness and equality of life and the fair distribution of social wealth. What exactly is people's livelihood? Sun Yat-sen did not give us an accurate and unchangeable definition, and some of his statements were sometimes inconsistent. Because the theory of people's livelihood contains some ideas similar to socialism, people's livelihood is often evaluated as socialism. Some people say that "people's livelihood is a doctrine between socialism and capitalism" and "it can show the characteristics of socialism and capitalism." It is also said that "developing state capitalism to the maximum extent" is the essence of Sun Yat-sen's "socialist" economic thought. Some people advocate people's livelihood capitalism Others believe that the state-owned socialism advocated by the people's livelihood is "the combination of capitalist production and socialist distribution." 1924 In August, when Sun Yat-sen gave a speech in Guangzhou after the first national congress in China, he talked about the definition of people's livelihood, and there were three points worth noting. Sun Yat-sen said in the first lecture on people's livelihood: "What is people's livelihood? ... I'll define it today. It can be said that people's livelihood is the life of the people-the survival of society, the life of the people, and the life of the masses. " He also said, "People's livelihood is the center of politics, economy and various historical activities." In the second lecture on people's livelihood, Sun Yat-sen said: "* * * materialism is the ideal of people's livelihood, and people's livelihood is the implementation of * * * production; So there is no difference between the two theories, and the difference is still in the method. " He also said, "This method of nationalizing the future rising land price is the average land right advocated by the Kuomintang and the people's livelihood. This kind of people's livelihood is * * * productism ... because the people's livelihood in the Three People's Principles is aimed at enabling all people to * * * produce. " "People are not only * * * property for the country, but all affairs should be * * *. This is the real people's livelihood. " In the third lecture on people's livelihood, Sun Yat-sen said: "People's livelihood should be implemented and attention should be paid to distribution. The distribution method we pay attention to is not to make money, but to supply the public. " He also said: "Our people's livelihood aims at breaking the capital system ... So the fundamental difference between people's livelihood and capitalism is that capitalism aims at making money and people's livelihood aims at raising people." What Sun Yat-sen wants to build is not a capitalist society, but a capitalist society without big capitalists. This is the true meaning of his livelihood. What is the true meaning of people's livelihood? In other words, what is the content of people's livelihood? What kind of society should China be built into? Sun Yat-sen realized that under the trend of the times at that time, China would inevitably embark on the capitalist road and "establish a new industry conducive to capital growth and circulation". How can China develop capitalism and prevent capitalists from monopolizing social wealth and suppressing the people? In view of the fact that China's industrial development is not long, big capitalists have not appeared, and capitalists have not monopolized the social economy, which provides a suitable objective environment for Sun Yat-sen to design a Chinese-style capitalist development strategy. Sun Yat-sen believes that as long as we implement a series of livelihood policies focusing on state-owned land and capital control, we can avoid big capitalists, prevent social wealth from being concentrated in the hands of a few people, and prevent capitalist autocracy. The starting point of people's livelihood is to prevent the emergence of monopolistic big capitalists and oppose the monopoly of social wealth by big capitalists. Sun Yat-sen solemnly pointed out in the revolutionary strategy formulated at the beginning of the revolution: "Anyone who dares to have monopoly power to control people's lives will abandon it with others." This is the truth. It can be seen that what Sun Yat-sen wants to build is not a society without capitalists, but a capitalist society without big capitalists. Implementing the policy of state-owned land and controlling the capital of developed countries can prevent big capitalists from endangering society and stimulate the vitality of the middle class. Dr. Sun Yat-sen called for and looked forward to the emergence of the middle class in China. The growing middle class is what Sun Yat-sen yearns for, and it is the class foundation for promoting people's livelihood and avoiding social ills. It can be said that people's livelihood represents the interests of China's national bourgeoisie, which is developing, severely suppressed, weak in political and economic power and eager to strive for equal status with bureaucratic monopoly forces and foreign bourgeoisie. Sun Yat-sen's people's livelihood socialism, in terms of social development goals, publicly declared that it does not conflict with Marxist socialism and capitalist ideals. Moreover, Sun Yat-sen, a good friend, is full of deep sympathy for the working people in China and has struggled for social equality all his life. He hated the labor-class struggle in Europe and America, and didn't want this kind of "social disease" to appear in China. The ultimate goal of people's livelihood is the peaceful and coordinated development of society and the permanent elimination of the struggle between the labor and capital classes. He believes that China society should plan ahead and design new development strategies to prevent the situation of "disharmony between labor and capital in western countries, and the working people are in trouble". Only by "building a country with great peace, freedom and equality" can we realize a social picture without class conflict and class competition and never have a revolution again. This assumption accurately reflects the desire of the middle class to develop capitalism in a peaceful, stable and coordinated social environment. Sun Yat-sen believes that the implementation of people's livelihood, equality in economic life and prosperity can ensure that China will never revolutionize again. "The ambition of public servants is to advocate industry, implement people's livelihood, take socialism as the destination, and let the people of the whole country enjoy peace and happiness." From his early years to his later years, Sun Yat-sen was very concerned about the lives of workers and peasants. He said, "I want to see people's living conditions improved, instead of helping a few people multiply their power until they become chaebol." Therefore, he is in favor of the method of public ownership of land and capital, hoping to create a social situation in which "the benefits obtained belong to all the people" and "there is no conflict with capitalists". This is his ideal livelihood model-socialism. Of course, the "socialism" pursued by Sun Yat-sen is the national socialism he often praised in Germany, the socialism that cannot overthrow the capital system at once, and the "socialism" in which labor and capital develop peacefully and harmoniously without causing socialist revolution. This kind of "socialism" is not socialism that has undergone a socialist revolution in Marxist theory. In my research paper, I call Sun Yat-sen's people's livelihood or "socialism" for the time being. This kind of people's livelihood socialism is actually a capitalist development model with China characteristics designed by Sun Yat-sen, which has the following characteristics: first, state capital is the main economic component of society, and big capital is not allowed to monopolize social and economic phenomena; Second, the middle class is the class foundation that supports social development, and the social development goals are held by political representatives who represent the interests of the middle class; Third, the socialist distribution mode should be integrated in order to strive for the peaceful and coordinated development of the whole society, make the whole people rich and prevent the social revolution from happening; Fourth, in terms of political direction and social development goals, he publicly claimed that he did not conflict with Marxist socialism and socialist ideals and was a good friend. There are some things in people's livelihood that are similar to the principles of socialism, which can be used for reference in building Socialism with Chinese characteristics. Judging from the above historical facts, Sun Yat-sen designed a beautiful picture of people's livelihood socialism, which is admirable. However, the social reality in China does not allow Sun Yat-sen to test his ideals on this land. He didn't deeply understand the farmers' desire for land in China, and didn't realize the existence of the struggle between farmers and the landlord class. Capitalist relations of production have been developing continuously in China, the economic strength of the national bourgeoisie has been enhanced, official enterprise has been developing continuously, and wholly foreign-owned enterprises have controlled the economic trend of China. The relationship between labor and capital in modern industrial enterprises has long existed. It is a one-dimensional thinking to underestimate these objective beings to design a beautiful picture of people's livelihood socialism. Imagine, in the reality of China, can land ownership and capital ownership be realized? Can monopoly capitalists be prevented after their realization? How to ensure the fair distribution of all members of society and everyone's happiness? Can class struggle between employers and employees be avoided? How to ensure that workers and capitalists do not conflict, farmers benefit and landlords do not suffer? These are all questions that are difficult to give a clear answer. Sun Yat-sen believes that class struggle is a morbid state of social development and can be artificially cured. As we all know, class struggle is an objective existence in the process of social and economic development and is driven by the differences in class interests. According to Marxist viewpoint, when capitalism develops to a certain stage, the arrival of socialist revolution is inevitable. Fantasy is subjective, utopian and naive to avoid class struggle and social revolution, and political revolution and social revolution are formed by World War I once and for all. Nevertheless, from the perspective of ideological history, Sun Yat-sen's thoughts on people's livelihood are similar to the socialist principles, which still have reference significance for us to build Socialism with Chinese characteristics today. In Sun Yat-sen's theory of people's livelihood, the ideas of developing productive forces, controlling private capital in developed countries, narrowing the gap between the rich and the poor, correctly handling labor relations, peaceful and coordinated development of the whole society, and common prosperity clearly reflect the main purpose of attaching importance to people's livelihood, benefiting people's livelihood and harmonious society, which is worth learning today. The 17th National Congress of the Communist Party of China clearly affirmed the Socialism with Chinese characteristics Road, adhered to the two unshakable development principles, adhered to the sound and rapid development of productive forces, adhered to the Scientific Outlook on Development, adopted effective measures to narrow the gap between the rich and the poor, vigorously solved the "three rural issues", supported the disadvantaged groups, and let all people share the fruits of reform and opening up. All these reflect the people-oriented principle, the principle of harmonious development, the principle of prosperity and the principle of attaching importance to people's livelihood. Sun Yat-sen's theory of people's livelihood can bring us some enlightenment in building a harmonious society.
