Hollow glass beads can be used in many fields of materials to improve or improve the water resistance, compressive strength, shrinkage and impact strength of materials. Low density, which can make lighter parts; Porosity and specific surface area are low, and there are few resin adsorbed by microbeads, so even if the filling amount is high, the viscosity is not high; Chemical stability and inertness; Good crack resistance, and the final product is easy to be post-treated, such as drilling, cutting and polishing, which is another advantage that hollow glass beads are easy to be destroyed. Because hollow glass beads are like shock absorbers, the compressive strength and impact strength of products are also improved. Because the hollow glass beads are destroyed before the resin matrix, the impact degree of the product is reduced. Hollow glass beads also have good thermal insulation performance, especially when the product is impacted by hot water, hollow glass beads and resin form a mutually unconnected thermal insulation layer. Finally, due to the poor coloring of hollow glass beads, the product is a little white, but sometimes this is also an advantage. On the one hand, it can reduce the amount of white pigments such as titanium dioxide by as much as 50%, on the other hand, it is worth mentioning that the color of the final product is softer. Application of Hollow Glass Beads in Artificial Marble and Agate Products The larger application of Hollow Glass Beads is artificial marble. In the United States, many manufacturers are using this filler, which has the following advantages: ① improving the impact performance, and the performance of the products made by the correct formula is higher than the requirements of the artificial marble association. ② Improve the continuity of texture layout and color, and make the product more beautiful and dazzling. (3) The curing time is reduced, and the mold turnover speed is faster. ④ Improve impact strength, crack resistance and reduce product breakage rate. ⑤ Improve machinability and reduce the time of deburring, cutting, drilling and polishing. ⑥ Reduce the wear of post-treatment tools. ⑦ Improve the coloring performance of light color and reduce the amount of TiO2 (although sometimes it is necessary to mix some dark colors). ⑧ Lightweight makes it easier to carry and install, and also reduces the transportation cost. The advantages listed above can obviously reduce the cost. Table 1 shows that the viscosity of the resin used in the standard formula of artificial marble and the formula containing hollow glass beads is 600 ~ 2000 cp, and the viscosity of the mixed system will not be increased by using hollow glass beads. In this formula, the volume of hollow glass beads, which accounts for 3.8% by weight, can reach 26.8%, which will reduce its final weight by 30%. Because the viscosity of the resin, the ambient temperature at that time and the particle size of calcium carbonate are the main factors affecting the viscosity of the mixture system, these factors should be optimized to make the texture smoother and bubbles easier to eliminate, especially when the temperature of the resin is less than 265438 0℃. The particle size of calcium carbonate should be less than 30 mesh to reduce the damage to glass beads.

Repair composite material (resin putty) The typical application of repair composite material is to add hollow glass beads into resin to replace some fillers such as calcium carbonate and talcum powder to make various putty, which has the advantages of light weight, strong adhesion, easy foaming and low shrinkage, especially the processing performance of grinding and polishing is significantly improved. For hollow microspheres, dust is a problem. Interestingly, in the post-treatment process such as grinding, the dust density produced by the destruction of hollow microspheres is the same as that of glass, and it will not float in the air and easily fall to the ground. This will greatly reduce the shortcomings of high dust content in the air. The putty is widely used to repair FRP products, automobiles, ships and machine tools. It should be noted that the diameter of hollow glass beads should not be too large to prevent excessive pinholes after grinding, and at the same time, an ideal gradation should be selected. Table 2 is a typical putty formula, of course, it should be optimized according to the viscosity of the resin and other factors. Table 2 Composition density of putty formula containing hollow glass beads Wt% Vol% resin 1. 14 37 42 hollow glass beads 0.23 5 29 talcum powder 2.60 58 29 The density of this formula is 1.3g/cm3, while that of ordinary putty is about 1.89kg/cm3.
As early as 197 1, a research paper on synthetic foam blocks and lightweight core materials introduced that hollow glass beads were added to epoxy resin to obtain high-quality foam, and the density decreased by 20% ~ 30%. When the foam density is 0.66g/cm3, the static pressure strength is 1 136kg/cm2. When manufacturing lightweight FRP core materials, it is precisely because of the use of hollow glass beads that the technical problems are solved. Compared with ordinary FRP, the use of this core material greatly improves the rigidity of the product and reduces the weight. The thickness of the core material is selected according to the stiffness. The density of the core material is 0.57 g/cm3 ~ 0.67 g/cm3, and the compressive strength is 284 kg/cm2 ~ 426 kg/cm2. It is widely used in various industrial products, such as vehicles, ships, sandwich composite plates for buildings, sports equipment, models, deep-water floating bodies and so on.
Polyester Furniture Polyester furniture is another application field of hollow glass beads, mainly to reduce its density. For example, the density of the mixture can reach 0.9g/cm3, while perlite is 1.09g/cm3 and calcium carbonate is 1.46g/cm3. At the same time, the processing properties such as sanding and polishing are also improved, and the working hours are saved by about 50%. With the increase of the proportion of hollow glass beads, its stiffness is also obviously improved.
Glass fiber reinforced plastic spraying process The resin system containing hollow glass beads can be sprayed by airless spraying equipment, and chopped glass fiber felt, cloth and other fabrics can be added to make marine laminates. Select the corresponding type of hollow glass beads according to different pressures in the system. The typical formula is that the volume content of hollow glass beads is 22%, and the corresponding weight content is about 5%. The mixing equipment with low shear force can be well dispersed in the resin.
SMC and BMC products Adding hollow glass beads to SMC and BMC can reduce the weight of final molded products by 25% ~ 35%. The density decreased from 65438±0.7g/cm3 to 65438±0.9g/cm3, and the dielectric properties were greatly improved. Choosing the right formula can make the insulation board that meets the specific requirements. A typical application example is the ability to make lighter cars and building parts.
Glass fiber winding and pultrusion process The application of hollow glass beads in fiber winding and pultrusion process can reduce the cost, reduce the density of composite materials and improve the impact strength and processability of composite materials. The use of hollow glass beads in pultrusion process can reduce the amount of resin and glass fiber. Adding 8% hollow glass beads can reduce the amount of glass fiber 15% or more. In addition to reducing weight, it can also improve the physical, dielectric and insulation properties of products. In addition, another advantage is that it can be used as a lubricant in the resin system, which can improve the pultrusion speed by 25% ~ 70%.
In addition to polyester, hollow glass beads of other resin systems can be added to epoxy resin to make synthetic foam blocks. In the United States, epoxy resin/glass bead synthetic foam has been successfully applied to rudder. This kind of foam plastic block is used as the core material of rudder, and the surface layer is FRP. Compared with polyester, epoxy can significantly improve the strength under the premise of reducing weight. The data measured in the laboratory show that the bending load of the rudder made of this material can reach 2500kg, which is three times the strength of engineering plastic ABS. In Germany, the rudder is also made of foam blocks made of polyimide resin and hollow glass beads. This rudder is used on a sailboat with a length of 12.5 meters and a weight of 55 kilograms. Rigid polyimide foam block has been successfully used in structural materials, which can improve its compressive strength, flexural strength and modulus and dimensional stability at high temperature.
