Basic pharmacological action and clinical application of atropine.
Atropine is an M-cholinergic receptor blocker. Has a wide range of pharmacological effects and uses;

(1) Relieve smooth muscle spasm and visceral colic. ?

(2) Ophthalmic application: Atropine can block M receptors of iris sphincter and ciliary muscle, leading to mydriasis and accommodation paralysis. It can be used for mydriasis, fundus examination, treatment of iridocyclitis and optometry. ?

(3) Inhibition of gland secretion: it is often used before general anesthesia to reduce respiratory secretion and prevent secretions from blocking respiratory tract and aspiration pneumonia. It can also be used for severe night sweats and salivation. ?

(4) Increase heart rate and accelerate atrioventricular conduction: Atropine can block the inhibitory effect of vagus nerve on the heart, so atropine is commonly used in clinic to treat bradyarrhythmia, such as sinus bradycardia and atrioventricular block. ?

(5) Relieve vasospasm and improve microcirculation: This effect of atropine has nothing to do with anti-M cholinergic receptor. High dose atropine is used to treat septic shock. ?

(6) Rescue organophosphorus poisoning.
