I know that papers can be divided into three categories: descriptive papers, empirical papers and normative papers. Descriptive papers focus on data collation, empirical papers focus on model testing and testing interpretation, and normative papers focus on status quo description and solutions. Undergraduate students are not advised to write normative papers because they have strong background knowledge and theoretical foundation, and they are generally written by professors or scholars, or by people with great work experience.
