At present, he is a four-level astronaut of the Astronaut Brigade of the China People's Liberation Army, with the rank of Air Force Lieutenant Colonel. He used to be the squadron leader of a brigade of the Air Force Aviation and was named the first-class pilot of the Air Force. In September 2020, he was selected as the third batch of astronauts in China. After comprehensive evaluation, he was selected as the crew of Shenzhou 17 manned mission.

Tang is currently a fourth-class astronaut of the China People's Liberation Army Astronaut Brigade, with the rank of Air Force. On June 26th, 2023, 10, the first flight crew composed of the second and third astronauts will go out to space. Less than 34 years old, Tang became the youngest astronaut to perform the space station mission.
