Tao Zhe was born in Hongkong on 1969. He spent his childhood in Taipei and graduated from Bethany American School in Taipei Building. 1984, Tao Zhe left Taiwan Province and settled in California. While studying at UCLA, he majored in psychology and minored in film.

1986, Tao Zhe and his classmates organized a band called "Instant Picture Course" at school.
