Khamenei is currently the supreme spiritual leader of Iran. Because he served as Iranian President and General Secretary of Islamic Republican Party from 198 1 to 1989, and he accumulated considerable prestige in the Iran-Iraq war at that time, former religious leader Khomeini died from 1989.
